 dual monitors in SalineOS?
« Thread Started on Sept 16, 2011, 12:44pm »

I just added a video card and second monitor. XFCE doesn't see the second monitor. I installed grandr and it also does not see the second monitor. Do I need to reinstall to get both monitors working together?

Oddly, when booting, dmessage starts on one monitor and then switches to the second monitor. Then when X starts, the second monitor goes black and the GUI starts only on the first monitor.

Are both video cards the same, or different makes or models?
I've heard this can be a problem. If so, try switching places with them.

Grandr is a good tool, usually handles dual monitors very well.

all different:

onboard 64MB AGP unichrome video with Dell monitor

64MB PCI nvidia card with Hyunai monitor.

the BIOS is set to use onboard by default. Will try switching BIOS default and see what happens.

switching places with the monitors makes no difference. Flipping the BIOS setting also makes no difference. I also tried booting from the live DVD and had the same problem there too. Maybe my BIOS is not capable of using 2 video outputs at the same time?

Most BIOS disable the onboard when a video card is plugged in. The only time I have seen dual monitors work well is either on laptops or video cards designed for it. I am told this has changed on SOME modern machines, but haven't run across one myself. By the sounds of your video chipsets the machine is a bit on the aged side and the BIOS is most likely disabling the onboard and only using the dedicated card.

Yes, I misread; I thought you already had a second card.

For a desktop, you will need a second video card.
Using the same type as the first card is usually best.

@murdock,
That's a great idea.
I guess I live too far in the backwoods.
Nowadays with reduced slot motherboards (at least mine is)
this is just what I need. Now to find one. :)

Thanks.

just saw this thread.

I always use dual monitors and got it to work in Saline. The key in my case was to install arandr. (note the a, not x)
