@loubapache May I suggest you install a Nvidia graphics card. They are the well supported in GNU/Linux by the community and Nvidia. Intel graphic cards tend to be the last thing to work with Linux but other stuff from Intel works great. Even if you Live in Big Rapids you should be able to pickup a used card for 10 or 15 bucks at some computer show/store.

Thanks, 62chevy.

Right now the KILL slim command is working well for me.

I have tried various distros on this Intel 82865G on board graphics card. SalineOS actually has the better performance (full screen Youtube) than a few others.

@Anthony,
Further to this thread, I tried to install to a USB using SalineOS Installer, after removing the Remastersys as mentioned in reply #14, and found that the Sos Installer would not start.

Re-installing Remastersys allowed the SalineOS Installer to start and run again. There must be some obscure dependencies still hanging around.

Yes, I really should have listed Remastersys as a dependency of SalineOS utils ... The reason the installer doesn't start is the same reason grub-doctor will fail to start, they both depend on remsu which is provided by Remastersys. This simple script determines whether the system is live or installed and uses sudo if it's live or su if it's an installed system.

Since this is a keyboard thread, I would like to report some excellent news about the Logitech MK520 (wireless keyboard and mouse combo). I got this combo from Staples on Black Friday.

The keyboard has many extra keys and many of them are working in SalineOS.

The media keys: |<<, >||, >>| all work.

The speaker keys: mute, decrease volume, and increase volume also work.

The browser keys: <- (page back), -> (page forward), and bookmark key (toggle bookmark bar) work wonderfully in Google-Chrome.

There are some other keys on the keyboard that do not work but those that do work were not expected.

Now we just need a more later version of music player. LOL. (Rhythmbox has tag issues, the version of Audacious in Debian Squeeze is too old, Banshee had issues in moving more than one song in playlist, . . .)

How about Listen, or Exaile? Exaile 0.3.2.2 has recently been added to SalineOS. And, I hear good things about Listen. Just make sure to run AutoUpdate before or after you install Exaile to get the latest version.

Edit: I have just pulled the Audacious backport into SalineOS testing, you can grab it by changing the AutoUpdate launcher to read gksu AutoUpdateTesting if Audacious is installed it will be upgraded, if not you can just run aptitude install audacious after running AutoUpdate to get it. The backport version is 2.4.4 If you have any issues with the package please let me know ASAP so I can look into them. Cheers.

Thanks. I will do this tomorrow. I replied in the other thread but I failed to so what you outlined here.

Edit: Got it working. Updated the other (Audacious) thread.

Thanks.

I gave Exaile 0.3.2.2 a try. WOW, this is the best player for Linux so far, IMHO. I will be testing it for the next a few days and if everything is as good as I am seeing now, it will be my player.

I have never heard of it.

Thank you for mentioning and adding it to SalineOS.

I managed to install newer kernel without removing anything :) kernel 2.6.38 needs linux-base install from backports first.
Code:
apt-get -t squeeze-backports install linux-base

for 2.6.39 or newer initramfs-tools is also needed. To install firmware, I needed to remove the old one first. Now I'm testing kernel from wheezy, with new ati card it works much better (e.g. switching to console in a blink of an eye;) ) than proprietary drivers. Of course there is regression too, without initializing network card somehow before SalineOS boot, netbook freezes after login.

The issues you will run into is Remastersys often requires a specific version of initramfs to function properly. Eventually your Remastersys created disks will start failing to boot doing this.

Sometimes you can pin down the initramfs version and force another kernel to install and get things running. Glen over at AVLinux uses this method at times to offer newer kernels. And, sometimes he just patches Remastersys to work with the newer initramfs. Either way be advised that though it might not remove Remastersys it very may well break it.

After playing with Exaile 0.3.2.2 for a full day, I concluded that it needs another version or two to be stable. It crashes a lot. The playlists have their own mind as where to stay. They also randomly disappear. It seems the underlying database architecture is not ideal.

I do not have a huge music library, about 35 GB. It is very difficult to organize them in Exaile 0.3.2.2.

It does have a good tagging engine.

So now I am back to Ryhythmbox.

Exaile 0.3.2.2 should be good for small music libraries.

For kernel 2.6.38 only newer linux-base is needed, initramfs-tools stays the same, so maybe it will work. I didn't touch remastersys yet, I try to compile dvb-t driver on this kernel first, but it still fails. I don't have an idea what is wrong, on old kernel it works ok.
