 +SOLVED+Hello ? Hello? No sound.
« Thread Started on Feb 5, 2012, 12:15pm »

OOboy. Ran out of tricks on this one.
Saline 1.5
Acer Veriton * old P4 2.8 512 (schools machine)
Loaded it up and did what I normally do. Head to youtube and grab the plugin.
Same for Google voice. fired up Youtube. No sound. Checked all the settings in ALSAMIX
Nada.(that's normal it's garbage) Grabbed the pulse goodies and adjusted as normal. Nada.
Disabled onboard audio and popped in an Encore 5 channel (which I use tons of)
and set the levels up. Nada.
Loaded some mp3. Wont play.
JUst for giggles tried some headphones and even another set of speakers.

The volume control shows Rythmbox is jamming Grand Funk railroad. I hope it's enjoying it ! ;D
What outputs would you guys like to see ?

Guess the first thing is, cat /proc/asound/cards

You disabled the the onboard in the bios, you should verify that it is in fact disabled. If the sound card you popped in is known to work under Linux, then it would be strange not to hear anything. You should ensure PulseAudio determines that is the device to use, you can do this with the tool pavucontrol (thats the package name). You should also run alsamixer and make sure that there is green 00 under each bar, if not then it might be muted you can toggle it unmute with m.

cat /proc/asound/modules

And the output of:
cat $HOME/.asound.conf

In this thread they found some relief: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=75552
Might shed some light on your problem?

I'd try the latest Wary Puppy on it, just to find out if it really works or not;
or the latest Knoppix (6.7.1) LiveCD.

Puppy is singing to me. Their little ALSA wizard absolutely rocks.

Well as of right now you are not using PulseAudio, even if you installed it. You need to create /home/doug/.asound.conf and add this:
Code:
pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}

ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}

pcm.!default {
type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

Then reboot and see if you have sound. I don't think you will, but test anyway. I think you will need to add this into /home/doug/.asound.conf save it and reboot to get it to work.

defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 0

But, I am not 100% sure. The output of aplay -l will tell me for sure.

pcm.!default {

}

ctl.!default {

defaults.ctl.card 0

Putting this in /home/doug/.asound.conf and rebooting should give you sound.

Edit: Assuming you have everything for pulseaudio installed.
