 Small issues about keyboard and Skype
« Thread Started on Feb 21, 2011, 11:26pm »

Hi All,

Proudly installing Saline few days ago (I am in love with aquarium, when I saw the desktop, I decided to reserve a partition for this lovely OS), I am experiencing two small problems:
- Keyboard localization.
Wishing the Italian layout, I have been using the Settings Manager and also the command line using the suggestion shown on
http://salinelinux.proboards.com/index.c....play&thread=115
but the system does not keeping it in memory, I have to use Settings Manager every time I switch on the system.
Also (but this is not very important), the system is not 100% translated.
- Skype.
Synaptic does not showing it; so, I have been trying to install from repository, but I am unable to edit /etc/apt/sources.list ; I get the following error:

Code:
root@Dominum---Saline:/# gksu /etc/apt/sources.listErrore di GConf: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See [url]http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/[/url] for information. (Details - 1: Recupero delle connessione alla sessione non riuscito: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)
Errore di GConf: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See [url]http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/[/url] for information. (Details - 1: Recupero delle connessione alla sessione non riuscito: Did not receive a reply. Please, apologize me, I am Italian and I know that my English language is not very fluent.
Thank you for your kind attention. Ciao :)

Saline OS 1.1 32 bit fully updated

P.S.
I have been trying to download the new user manual following the link at http://salinelinux.proboards.com/index.c....play&thread=161
but Chromium warning me saying that the file can harm my OS

To fix the keyboard try logging in as root and issuing these two commands:
setxkbmap -keymap it
setxkbmap -layout it

The error that gets printed when you try and open something from the terminal as root can safely be ignored. I have seen this behavior on Debian, Ubuntu and half a dozen other Debian based systems its cause is unknown to me, if you specified a text editor on the command it should still function after spamming errors. To modify your sources list please run gksu mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list as a normal user or use the GUI Applications menu > System > Software Sources.

The locales I use are from Debian, any issues with them can be reported upstream. The user manual is only in English right now. Having people voulenteer to translate it would be fantastic, but I will not be holding my breath ::)

The Chromium warning is normal behavior. This is programmed in to make sure you initiated the download and not some exploit to get a malicious file on your machine. This is more important in Windows than in Linux but Google Chrome is built off Chromium so the functionality is there.

Hi Anthony,

Thank you very much for your kind and quick help :)
Maybe I did mistake, because the two commands don't solved the problem (I get the Italian layout with "setxkbmap -layout it" but rebooting, it is US again); this is the output:
Code:
dominum@Dominum---Saline:/$ suPassword:
root@Dominum---Saline:/# setxkbmap -keymap it
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 147 (XKEYBOARD)
Minor opcode of failed request: 23 (XkbGetKbdByName)
Serial number of failed request: 9
Current serial number in output stream: 9
root@Dominum---Saline:/# setxkbmap -layout it
root@Dominum---Saline:/#

About Skype, perfect ! - I got it :) but unfortunately, the voice is very bad; I have been working on settings but the result still no good (checking out, even the voice recorder is not working now).
I have been trying to set alsamixer, but not solved yet, maybe needing time to find the right way.
However, the main problem is the webcam not working; I know that I have to change the command to start it, but I am new to Xfce and still I don't find the footpath ( with the application on the bottom panel like Pidgin, is easy, just working on "Property", but where I have to go looking for the ones which are under the menu "Application" like Skype ? - I will try to work on it ::) Ciao

P.S.
I have been downloading the new manual

I will look into keyboard layouts and locales some more here in a little while. I would like to work up something for the installer for this sometime in the future. You can add setxkbmap -keymap to the file /etc/rc.local and save it. This will set your keymap every single boot (This file is run at every boot its very useful for adding all kinds of things to).

You can actually see the commands the menu entries use by using the Xfce Application finder. Under Applications > Accessories. You can also use the application finder to make new launchers, just drag and drop the entry from the application finder to the launcher creation window. The Xfce mixer actually sets the properties of alsamixer, you can also access it using the command alsamixer in the terminal window (Don't run this as root). Some audio chipsets work better using pulse audio, you may consider installing it (It isn't exactly lightweight).

Ciao Anthony,
Code:
You can add setxkbmap -keymap to the file /etc/rc.local and save it. This will set your keymap every single boot (This file is run at every boot its very useful for adding all kinds of things to).

Done :)

Code:
You can actually see the commands the menu entries use by using the Xfce Application finder. Under Applications > Accessories. You can also use the application finder to make new launchers, just drag and drop the entry from the application finder to the launcher creation window.

Well, I try to explain: clicking on the icon to start Skype the default command is "skype" and the webcam does not works.
If I use the command line typing
" $ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype "
the webcam works :)
I wish to write this new command inside the launcher already exsisting, but I don't know how to do; using "Application finder" clicking on "Skype" it just starts. I want go "inside" it to write the new command :D (I found the way to make new launcher on the desktop, but I don't want it, wishing to use the already existing launcher on the "Applications>Net" footpath.

Code:
The Xfce mixer actually sets the properties of alsamixer, you can also access it using the command alsamixer in the terminal window (Don't run this as root). Some audio chipsets work better using pulse audio, you may consider installing it (It isn't exactly lightweight).

Big score here ! - I have been trying to install Pulseaudio+Pavucontrol+Pavumeter. Everything gone wild :D
So, removed it. Now everything (Voice recorder, Audacity, Cheese) working properly, Skype too but with low quality voice.
(I have been running "alsamixer" as user and "alsactl store" as root). Ciao :)

You can modify the .desktop file for skype in /usr/share/applications and change the exec line to whatever you need. Just right click on it and open with gedit/mousepad (Launch Thunar with gksu thunar. You will have to logout for the change to take effect.

@Sybelius,
I've had this problem for years, it seems, with Xfce.
Set the IT keyboard with the GUI menu. And set IT as the default.
Then remove the EN keyboard.
Should still be IT after reboot.

It's the only way I know to not have to fiddle with rc.local.
saludos.

Hi Anthony, hi Richard, hi All,

@ Richard: thank you for your right and kind suggestion; I have been able to set the keyboard's issue before reading your post.
Yes, after all work done following Anthony's teaching nothing changed; so, today as last chance I have been working on Xfce 4 Settings Manager>Keyboard>Map, removing US map.
Yes ! - This is the right way, I have my keyboard IT map always now :D

@ Anthony:
- Keyboard's issue fixed, as written above to Richard.
- Skype issue: talking with a lot of respect, I am afraid that we have a bug, because I have been trying to work on the launcher by many ways getting nothing.
- Changing the command inside the already existing launcher = do nothing.
- Making script with the new launcher's command = do nothing.
- Making new launcher on the desktop as root = do nothing (idem as user). Click on it open "Skype.desktop".
This is "Skype.desktop":
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=Skype
Comment=
Categories=Application;
Exec=LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
Icon=/usr/share/icons/skype.png
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=false
GenericName=

About Skype I don't have any new idea, I give up for now.

Ciao :)

Hi,

To localize Saline, type in a terminal :

Code:
# dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

Code:
# dpkg-reconfigure locales

That's all, folks.

If you are using a 1.3+ disk you can localize SalineOS within the installer :) Or, launch just the section of the installer that does language settings on the installed system with the command gksu localizesys

Hi Anthony,

I use version 1.3, I just installed to replace the previous one to test this new feature of the installer.
It installs well location after login, but not before.
I found myself with my login and password to type in QWERTY-US, while I'm azerty-fr.
By cons, once logged in, I was azerty-fr.
That's why I went through the command lines I quoted above, that solve the problem permanently.

:)

Fanch, I am a bit baffled by your report above. When I started writing localizesys (Program that runs within the installer to set languages) I knew just about nothing about language settings. Therefor the first thing I did was read the scripts that run when dpkg-reconfigure locales is run, and I used some of the same code for setting the system language. The only code that is really different is the GUI and how it gets what language setting it will be using.

In order to get an AZERTY layout within the installer you had to use the manual setup option am I correct? The exact command this runs is dpkg-reconfigure -f gnome keyboard-configuration (The -f gnome just tells it to use the GTK GUI). I have been doing test installs of 1.3.2 images all day and for the life of me cannot seem to reproduce the behavior you are reporting.

There maybe something set by the Debian live scripts that needs undone before copying the system to the hard disk. This would be the only way to explain the behavior, but I would need more information to try and track it down. Could you please try and reproduce this on your machine and send me a report so I can dig a bit deeper? The information I need is, the exact locale name you choose, such as French-Canada or French-France. And, the options you chose on each and every screen in the manual keyboard configuration section. A virtual box install should be sufficient for testing :)

Looks like we are thoroughly internationalized at this point.
I just figured I'd toss this vid in for folks with sound issues.

Hi Anthony,

I 've made a new install of SalineOS 1.3.1 64bits :

[image] img1
[image] img2
[image] img3
[image] img4
[image] img5
[image] img6
First reboot : (img 7) i'm with qwerty : I type fanch, it write fqnch.
[image] img7
After changing keyboard conf (img 8,9,10)
[image] img8
[image] img9
[image] img10
second reboot (img 11)
[image] img11
And after reboot (img 12) : same trouble...
[image] img12

But, with # dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration, trouble is deleted.

I note that once logged in everything is fine. (Locales and keyboard).

Hope it can help... :-/
