 Liquorix Kernel OK with Saline?
« Thread Started on Jan 20, 2011, 7:25pm »

I'm using the latest liquorix kernel with LMDE right now because it enables Suspend/Hibernate and my internal Mic on my laptop which the squeeze kernel won't do.

Any problems using it? I assume not, but ..... ::)

I wouldn't recommend it, but then again you will have no more issues running the Liqourix kernel under Saline than you would basic Debian. You should keep in mind if you are planning to continuously update to newer kernel versions that sgfxi will have to be re-ran each and every time if you need proprietary graphics drivers that is. This is not an issue for most people, because Saline OS 1.0 will keep the Squeeze Stable kernel for its entire lifespan.

Thanks....yes, every new Liqourix kernel I have to rebuild my Nvidia driver....but not having Mic for Skype (or anything) and Suspend/Hibernate isn't really an option. This is a Dell Precision M6500 Laptop btw. I'd prefer just to stay with the stable squeeze kernel, but I lose too much functionality.....so there I am.

Please update us on how Liqourix kernel works for you. I'm using 2.6.37 with Debian Squeeze and it working just fine.

Installed SalineOS on my desktop on Friday. Everything was great. Really like the fish.
Installed the 2.6.37-0.dmz.4-liquorix-686 yesterday on the desktop using smxi.
Everything I have works: printer, scanner, eth0. Really nice.

Installed SalineOS on my EeePC-1005-HA this afternoon. Everything worked.
Well, the wireless did. Had to install eee-acpi-scripts then add
“quiet silent acpi_osi=Linux” into /etc/default/grub then # update-grub
Then I could turn off the touch pad while typing. It'll drive you nuts.

Then ran smxi to do all the rest. Noticed that the Liquorix kernel was at .5
so installed that. No problems on the Eeepc, but there were some problems
mentioned on TechPatterns about the .4 and earlier. But smxi usually recommends
fairly stable versions, so I ran smxi again today and upgraded my desktop to the 2.6.37-0.dmz.5-liquorix-686 release also. So far, both running fine.

Beware!! Your mileage may vary!!
Remember to always keep a good working kernel to fall back on, just in case.

No real reason to use a newer kernel except that I've been using it on Lmde with no problems. And it does seem quicker, though I can't tell since SalineOS is already fast.

That's good to hear. Because SalineOS is Debian based I figured it would work. The Liqourix kernel solved boot time errors that the standard Debian kernel was giving. No ipv6 either with Liqourix kernel .

Roger....getting ready to install Saline now, I'll report back....I've found a kernel dma remapping boot option that enables suspend/hibernate for me, but that may not take care of my internal microphone for skype. I'll 'port back :)

I'm using the Liquorix Kernel now:

Code:
Linux precision 2.6.37-0.dmz.6-liquorix-amd64 #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Wed Jan 26 01:06:09 CST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This kernel with intel_iommu=on as a boot option enables the following on my machine in sig:

Suspend
Hibernate
Microphone and Microphone with Skype

Therefore it's a no brainer for me to use this kernel. I tried the dma remapping option above with the stock kernel, but didn't work.

It's supposed to offer an improved desktop experience.
I'll try again when I have some way to measure or determine the improvement.
I really had no other reason that just to try it out. Lots of people use it and like it.

I had the liquorix kernel installed on my Squeeze install but it had 6 updates since its' release. The first couple of releases solved a couple of minor errors I was getting. But update #6 gave me more errors than the stock kernel so off it came and old is now back on.

If you need a better kernel it might be better to roll your own.

I've turned off the repo after I got a Liquorix Kernel that worked for me. I'll need a recent kernel for my hardware. I'll just use this kernel until a backported kernel comes out for Squeeze, then I'll try that one.

@joutlan - I understand why you went with that kernel but I didn't need it. And with so many errors and fails when I ran dmesg I decided to give it some time. The stock kernel is only giving me minor errors liquorix fixed that at first but when #6 came out my hole system went wacky so I ditched it for the stock kernel

yeah, it really depends on hardware....my suspend/hibernate and internal microphone all work now, and no errors so I've frozen it at:

Code:
john@precision:~$ uname -a
Linux precision 2.6.37-0.dmz.6-liquorix-amd64 #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Wed Jan 26 01:06:09 CST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This one is great for me, but I think this is the one that caused you problems. damentz removed the dma remapping from this kernel so I have to set it as boot option in grub to make suspend/hibernate work. He said that option that I need, would hose some systems...so round and round she goes :)

That's why I say rolling your own is better because that way you get the things you need and want. It can be time consuming but in the end just might be worth it long term.
Yes dmz.6 made my system go wacky. But I'm glad it is working for you.

I 'might' do that...with Slackware since it uses an unmodified kernel, I could grab any kernel I wanted at Kernel.org and recompile it. Can I do that with Debian? I don't know. tks
