 Grub error 15 [Solved]
« Thread Started on Aug 16, 2011, 4:58pm »

This is my first post, so hello to everyone :) I installed SalineOS from USB key, on PATA hard disk seen during installation as sda. Grub was installed to MBR of this disk, root, boot and home on sda1. After reboot I've got grub error 15. Then I tried to install other OSes, there were no such problem. So I left grub from last OS installation, and I tried SalineOS once again, but this time I put grub on sda1 to see what will happen. After reboot, grub menu with SalineOS showed up, but nothing booted. From this I suppose that installation with other OS on different partition will allow to boot SalineOS, but how to fix this issue without touching my current partition table to make room for another OS? Thanks in advance, and sorry for any mistakes:)

SalineOS uses grub2.

Try re-installing grub to the master boot record of sda1, you can use the Remastersys Grub Restore utility for this. It can be accessed from the system menu in the live environment.

Thanks, but it doesn't work. I run Remastersys, on sda1 (debian 6.0.1), then install to mbr, but after that it is the same grub as before. When I hit enter on SalineOS menu entry I get: Error: symbol not found: 'grub_os_area_addr'. After new installation it is the same menu, and the same error as above. I run Remastersys twice after new installation, and it also didn't have any effect at all :(

To reiterate, don't install Grub to MBR, install to sda.

Maybe I didn't made myself clear, I've already done that. I've run Remastersys twice, in the first window there is only one option sda1. On the second I tried both possibilities, to mbr and to root, and neither worked.

Sorry. Look at your BIOS and see which is the first disk in startup sequence.

The first and only is this PATA HDD. During installation USB is seen as sdb and I boot it through F8, I don't change my boot order. Also I tried booting from USB as my first drive, but after running Remastersys it is still the same. It seems like running Remastersys doesn't have any effect at all, it leaves everything untouched. When I had grub 0.97 from previous installation it was error 15, when previous installation had grub2 it's this addr error.

Do you have a partition marked as bootable? You can check this from the live environment using GParted. Under Flags one should be listed as boot, this is only required on some computers its a bios thing. If none are marked, right click on the root partition and click Manage Flags. Check the box next to boot.

This may also be the cause, another bios related issue:
If you are booting with the USB key plugged in try booting with it unplugged, similarly if you don't have it plugged in try booting with it plugged in. Also, you could try selecting the Boot the first hard disk option from the live menu and see if that works, then re-install Grub with the Remastersys grub restore from the installed system.

If you have another Linux install on the hard disk you could always try and run update-grub with root privileges from there. It should pick up SalineOS and add it to the boot menu.

Yes, I have sda1 marked as bootable. I tried to boot with and without usb, both methods gave the same result. Choosing boot the first hard disk from the live menu shows only live menu after few seconds. I don't have any other OS, this drive isn't too big, I want to install only SalineOS on it.

Also I checked md5 sum of live usb, it is the same as downloaded iso, so usb key is ok.

I see where the confusion may be. The Live page with wallpaper and icons is exactly the same as the startup page if you use autologon in the installed version until you change things. The Icon for install is still on that as well as the icon for User manual. You can delete either of these and either reboot or press F5 after clicking on the dekstop to clear it. After a reboot the icons will only be present on your Live disk page, not the installed page.

No, it's not that, I never use autologon, when I choose to boot hard disk from live menu, I get grub live menu again, when I remove usb, it simply hangs after, so it's usb menu, not HDD.

In that case the SalineOS 1.4 system is not installed at all on sda, just running from USB. Please read the SalineOS manual under Installation and follow the instructions closely.
