Hello all,
I'm playing with SalineOS live with a USB. I have a couple questions:
1) Is there a way to save changes made while running live from a USB? 2) I would like to install PowerTop, Upower, and built-essentials, but they are not in the repository provided. Does the live addition use different repositories then the installed version?
Thanks, Matt

1. Yes, add persistence to the USB key. Unetbootin supports creating a bootable key with persistence. 2. The installed system will only have an additional repository if you install restricted codecs during install, otherwise they are identical. Your problem most likely stems from the package list being shipped empty or a failure of apt to update (Server issues at the time you ran it would be the primary cause of this). Before trying to install any packages in the live desktop, you must first update the package cache. The command sudo aptitude update will suffice, or opening synaptic and clicking Reload.

Thanks for the reply Anthony.
I followed these instructions (http://salinelinux.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=installsetup&action=display&thread=29) to create my live usb as unetbootin didn't work. I'll try again with a difference version of unetbootin. And I'll be sure to update the package cache and retry installing the few programs.
I want to use powertop and upower to check the power usage of Saline vs other distributions I've used on my netbook. I'm also trying to set my wireless card up while running live. I think I need build-essentials in order to run make and make install.
Thanks again for your reply. Matt

I re-made the live usb and added 100 MB for persistence. How do I utilize it? When I shutdown, I'm clicking "save session," but my session isn't saved. I would like to get my wireless card setup to test it which requires a restart after installing the drivers. But I lose the drivers on restart. I'm using a realtek 8188ce wireless card.

I have a feeling that the 100 megabytes was not nearly enough space for all the changes you wanted to make, so the image is getting ignored when you boot up next time around. To accomplish what you want it would be best to install SalineOS to the USB key like it were a hard drive. Assuming you have enough space this is the best method. The second method would be to install SalineOS to your hard disk, make your changes and then go to Applications > System > Remastersys Backup and run backup mode. Remastersys will make you an ISO file that you can "Burn" to a USB key by right clicking on it from Thunar. This is more time consuming but will give you everything you want in a live setup.

I didn't realize you could install it on the USB like it was a hard Drive. Thanks.

Thumb drives are right up there with virtual box. Useless.

Ahh, not really. I have Sos-1.6 installed on a 16 GiB SanDisk (actually only 15 GiB usable), which I use on the company netbook while traveling to avoid contaminating the poor WinXP on the netbook. My biggest limitation is I don't have enough space to install VirtualBox. It all depends on ones needs.
I've never had much luck with persistance either.
