 Cannot access gedit /etc/fstab as root
« Thread Started on May 19, 2012, 8:02pm »

I have just installed the 64bit ver 1.6 of SalineOS. I need to modify /etc/fstab among a lot of other things, but I cannot figure out the secret method used by SalineOS. Below are several of my attempts. Any ideas?

root@nova:/home/albert# gedit /etc/fstab

It should work, if not, maybe your downloaded iso is broken, or there were some installation errors. Try checking your iso, and install it once again.

What, exactly, should work? Using a root terminal? sudo? su? All of the above?

Just checked the md5 and it is OK. I have already installed twice; the first time I used the same password for root and user. I assumed that these errors were because of that so I reinstalled with different passwords and the bad behaviour still exists. What "errors in installation" are you referring to? What should I be looking for?

I don't see sudo there :P It doesn't matter what exactly should work, knowing that at least one is enough from logical point of view ;) Matching md5 is sometimes not enough, especially if you have USB key. You didn't provide any useful information about your config, so I can't be more precise. Maybe your disk is failing, or some cable, or cdrom... But definitely something, normal, good installation doesn't behave like in your initial post.

If you are installing from a USB key, and you build it according to this:
http://salinelinux.proboards.com/index.c....splay&thread=29
then you may install from this key, exactly as from the DVD.

Most other methods have failed to install for me. This does work. You may need 2 USB keys if you wish to install to the larger of the USB keys.

1. I use a 2 GiB to build the USB2GiB
2. Boot from that and install to the USB16GiB or whatever
3. Be sure to write grub to the MBR of the USB16GiB
4. You can always use Grub-Doctor to write grub to the USB key.

Hi !

@ elderwuss :
you can try geany or mousepad instead of gedit.
Who knows? ;)

As you may see from the attached, I got the same errors in Terminal using su. However I also got the window to edit /etc/fstab. You should too if everything was included in your iso.

@beardedragon:
Just curious. Are you sure you actually edited /etc/fstab? i.e. did you make a visible change and save it? I was presented with a copy of /etc/fstab, but as readonly.

Also did you attempt to edit preferences of gedit? I too was able to edit a copy, but could not save it. Also, I first needed to get a larger font because the default font was so tiny on my machine. However, all of the options in Edit->Preferences were disabled.

Try this on the installed system as a normal user, gksu gedit /etc/fstab

Don't forget to save your changes, the dbus errors aren't that important and show up for everyone, and on all distributions build on Debian Squeeze with a root user.

@fanch:
Good point. Using Mousepad rather than Gedit works clean. Doesn't solve the problem with Gedit, but it does narrow it down somewhat.

@anthony:
Yes, that works as predicted. Good to know that the errors may be ignored.

Yeah, no error messages here using mousepad or geany, only with gedit. Either way, I was able to edit the file, though. So I wonder what's causing the problem for the OP. By the way, I've taken to using geany most of the time in all distros. Very nice little text editor.

Edited, saved, then fixed what I changed using the same procedure. As you may see it says on top fstab (/etc) gedit, Not "Read Only" But I see others have come up with a solution. I try all my solutions on my own computer before suggesting them.
