It looks like a hardware problem. Check your cables first (for HDD and DVD), then disks, S.M.A.R.T. is not so smart, don't rely on it.

I really did not want to crack my case, sigh, I'll be offline for awhile.

Back on line. Cables like none I'seen before. White snaps on top and bottom of a card. The bottom one clicked, maybe you were right?? Anyway got to vacuum the three fans and curse myself for taking out too many screws. Had to replace the covers for more boards in the back and that was a witch W/(B) Now what? Thought I'd add this:

Maybe you really do have a hardware problem?
Just an incredible amount of problem with the video.
I know you've checked cables and such, do you have another video card?
NOTE: Sorry posted this before I saw your latest exchange with Petrek.
I blame the forum software, not because I didn't look. : :-[

If you can, try to install from USB stick. And dd your target partition with zero's (be careful with this, if you have some other partitions don't make a mistake. But the best is to zero the whole disk if you can, after that you will need to create partition table in gparted). If you have broken cable/disk it should fail somewhere. If everything will be fine, clean everything, especially your graphics card.

After putting things together I installed 12-4, so far, so good. I will wait for a few more reboots done naturally before calling this solved. Thanks to everyone for your support, especially Petrek for the cable,

If this problem (or similar) will happen again, it's better to buy and install a new cable.

Reflecting on this, I think I'll check out my cables.
Some of them are probably 10 maybe 7 or 8 years old.
It's what happens when you put in a new mother board and keep all the old stuff. :)

I give up. If I am going to run SalineOS it has to be without a Driver for my Radeon 3000.
Crashed three times during reboots done in different ways. Ran sgfxi and rebooted once, Crash. I checked the cables. I do not intend to dd the drive to all 0s. I have a system that works even if it is a Ubuntu based sys. This desktop is so tightly packed I would have to have someone else replace the video board and cables. Thanks guys, I am going to close this thread soon as unsolved. Comments welcome for one week.

If you have broken cable, it will once connect, and once not. Without replacing it, you risk data loss, even on this Ubuntu based sys. Probably there's something broken too, but not so visible as on SalineOS.

Guess I have to see the man next payday. Once a month is not soon enough. I'll manage until then.
