 [SOLVED] lxde and xfce sessions
« Thread Started on Jan 28, 2011, 1:39am »

Hello everyone, so far I'm loving salineos, xfce is to fast and responsive, but I also like lxde and I installed it, but when I log off and or restart, I no longer have xfce as a session to choose, when I login it goes straight to the lxde environment, so am wondering how can I choose an xfce or lxde session.
Thanks
fitus

At boot, when you see the wave, touch the F1 key until you get to the Session you want to run.

Shouldn't there be a choice at the login screen when you add a DE, though?

SLiM keeps most things as a keystroke or a command you can input in the username field. Most of this is documented in the user manual. Switching Sessions is not currently, but will be added. SLiM has way less dependencies and uses a lot less resources than other login managers, but may not be the easiest to do advanced things with.

indeed slim is something an not really familiar with, by the way pressing f1, I have noticed that there is more than one DE option but then when session is chosen it says that is falling back to default, wonder why is there more DE's listed than what is installed.

Because, it just lists the ones it can start. GDM and all the others have to probe whats there at boot, which takes more time. Speed sometimes comes at the cost of little things such as this. One the reasons ChromeOS boasts of such fast boot times is that Google uses SLiM for the login manager (Or did last time I checked out ChromeOS).
