 Internet sharing problem
« Thread Started on May 11, 2011, 8:58pm »

This is not something I would normally want to do but in this case, I need to be able to monitor my incoming line from the satellite modem with one computer and have another connected to the second NIC for its internet connection. (There is some wierd stuff going on with my connection that gets excess bandwidth charged to my account sporadically and I want to try to track it down. The tech support morons at the satellite ISP are no help at all with the basic problem and will not (understandably) provide any support for anything past the ethernet connection on their modem.)

My problem is trying to get the two ethernet controllers playing together. Both are Realtek 1000Base controllers (8169 family), as is the downstream computer. I want eth0 to be the connection to the internet and eth1 to connect to the second computer. All the hardware works independently as I can connect any of them directly to the satellite modem and get a connection. When I try to get them together, the line between the two computers won't come up. I've tried with and without crossover...shouldn't be necessary with 1000Base.

In my ignorance, I am likely making this more difficult than it should be. It seems like it should be a straightforward linux-router application but I can't make it work. Any help deeply appreciated.

In a Linux Router connection there is only one input from source (Modem) and depending on the type many outputs to different computers. In my case it is ISP via DSL Modem to Router and connections to an iMac and a PC running Linux plus a Network Printer via WIFI.

Firestarter has its own built in internet connection sharing stuff. When you configure Firestarter set it to protect eth0 and tell it to share the connection. Setup instructions for Firestarter are in the user manual as well as a link to their documentation.

I tried to use firestarter's connection sharing, screwed something up in the config and couldn't recover...even after "apt-get remove --purge". Must be some buried files there somewhere.

You can set internet connection sharing in network-manager-gnome too, right click on the notification area icon in the upper right and hit edit connections. Select the interface that connects to the internet and hit Edit... its under IPv4 Settings, Method:

I haven't used this, but it should work well. I always just used Firstarter if I needed to share a connection.

I don't know if this will help but I have the same need but with mobile broadband, and last night I installed SalineOS to my main PC that runs our net to the other PC's in the house. This is what I did with no issues at all.

Installed network-manager, network-manager-gnome, network-manager-pptp, network-manager-pptp-gnome.
Installing those pulled in some other things that are needed automatically. I shut down wicd and removed it and ran nm-applet to get network-manager to pop up in the panel. I got my net connected too the usb moden as normal, and them plugged in a cable for lan and ran it to a wireless modem. In network-manager I put Auto etho on connect automatically and available to all users. Under the IPv4 tab I selected shared to other computers in the drop down and boom instant connection sharing.
In conky I set it up to show in/out on both eth0, and ppp0 so I can keep track of whats going on with both in coming, outgoing, and whats shared. Works like a charm and no problems at all.

The problem is that the Internet Connection Sharing Wizards that come with Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Me don't work very well, and in some cases, can break your existing Internet Connection.
