 Broadcom support?
« Thread Started on Mar 18, 2012, 9:33pm »

I have 3 systems, 2 have wifi cards using Broadcom chipsets, the kind of chipsets where I have previously needed fwcutter. The chips are 4312 and 4318, iirc. Lately, they don't need command line efforts, so I see some progress in some distros.

Presently, I'm using Kubuntu 11.10, I'm thinking I want to lean less towards *buntu. Maybe SalineOS is a possibility?

My experience with *buntu has been that the wifi will not work when running a live environment (tried from CD and from flash drive). During Kubuntu installation, I select to add third party software because, IIRC, that option is described as enabling later access to the Broadcom drivers. After installation, manually installing additional drivers (using K menu > Applications > System > Additional drivers) will definitely get me a wireless network interface that works.

Networking that works out of the box is my prime focus and is key to me leaving the distro installed... if I can't get on the internet to find the drivers and to read how to get the interface working, I just move on and install something else. I simply cannot take days to research how to get stuff working, I need to use the systems for my work.

I searched the forum for "Broadcom", I got this:

Ok, I am asking outright if anyone here has Broadcom wifi that worked immediately when they installed SalineOS.

TIA.

SalineOS includes the firmware for the more modern Broadcom chipsets. As for the 4x Broadcom cards you may need to install and use b43-fwcutter.

Yup, all are 43XX cards.

That will be easy, if all of the packages are included on the DVD. If I have to go on the internet to download the package(s) I need to set up my internet.... that's not so fun when my internet is not working.

Are all the relevant packages included on the DVD?

b43-fwcutter is not included on the DVD.

Ok, so IF I can get b43-fwcutter onto the target system, will this Ubuntu tutorial work with SalineOS?
Specifically, will the portion work about having no working internet?

All of that applies, except you won't use sudo on the installed system. Use su to get a root shell on an installed system, if you follow the guide in the live environment then you can use sudo or sudo su.

Thanks for the Broadcom setup confirmation, as that makes all the difference for me to proceed.

Walking through the steps before I actually attempt the broadcom installation, I'm wondering how to instruct SalineOS to configure and use the new broadcom drivers after I install fwcutter and extract the firmware files.

I believe after the firmware files are in /lib/firmware all that is required is rebooting.
