 Screen 'bug' issue (SOLVED)
« Thread Started on Jan 27, 2012, 11:50am »

Hey all. I know I saw a post somewhere in regards to removing the small icon that sits in the top left corner of the screen. It points to the desktop itself but I want to get rid of it and I can't seem to find the post which shows how. The darn thing sits on top of every window.Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure what you want to do exactly. Your desktop files/icons are in /home/username/Desktop you need to delete it there and restart. Also, in main menu Settings -> Desktop -> Icons you can change what icons will be showing on your desk along icons from Desktop directory.

It looks to be the 'gnome-menu' icon which is like 3 cogs. It overlays everything and as I took a screenshot with screenshooter it looks like a black box in the upper right corner of my screen just below the bar.

btw image shack uploader has a 2.2 deb file that works great

Sounds like a desklet from Cairo Dock. Right click it and see if there is a menu to remove it, then, hit F5 to refresh your desktop.

It is just a dead box which overlays everything. It looks exactly like the 3cog gnome-menu icon until I click on it (right clicking gives me the default desk right click menu which is what I use). Finalizing any mouse action (desk menu) from this area then gives me the overlay with whatever window I opened. It appears to be a non-updated area of the screen in regards to the video adapter or something. I am running the sgfxi nivia drivers under dvi. I installed through vga and booted a few times before I switched to dvi but I doubt I screwed up. All desk items are already unchecked and checking them makes no diff & cairo was never installed.

I know i saw a fix for this. i'll have to search

If you hide your Panel or move it to the bottom or a side does the box move? Have you tried going back to VGA?

It looks like a panel with just one custom launcher. When you right click on your main panel and choose Customise panel... how many panels can you see there?

I found the problem.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=159779
It was flash and my nvidia card (or rather nvidia and linux). I switched from the flashplugin-nonfree to the flashplayer-mozilla and then disabled the plugin in FF entirely. Midori plays youtube fine, webkit tyvm, (which for some reason last time i ran it under a previous saline install it didn't I thought). Iceweasel thought that it was running whenever FF 9.01 was and so refused to open and I had to remove it. In any case the best way to watch youtube is with minitube hands down. Speaking of which, you have to extract the source and then overwrite it with the binary (actually delete the original) before you install it to get the latest minitube version and it doesn't need flash at all.
Thanks for all the help. I have my screen back yeah!

unbelievable - I had to remove the openjava as well. Apt automatically replaced it with sun's version. I will say this though, my memory usage went down a lot.

I notice that after making the top bar fixed and normal instead of the entire width, the bug went away entirely. Switching javas only moves the bug up to the top of the screen apparently.
OK, so after booting this morning the bug is back. As one user suggested I should move the bar around which does work to remove it. I don't think it's a conflict with my drivers and linux. I think it may be related to xfce itself, the kernel, who knows, at this point.

After updating to latest certified nvidia 295.20 drivers from StationDrivers (released Feb13) I think they may have fixed the bug.
Using sgfxi under slim was a one step process.
http://www.station-drivers.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=47
Link has drivers for amd as well.

update NOPE
I disabled all transparency and switched to full width instead of normal. Running for a couple hours with no glitches. Then ran Borg Calendar and it immediately reappeared.
My video card is the same one from the link. Sorry to make this a long post. At this point because it did not happen in mint or fedora I'm going with the update xfce or switch cards solution. In the mean I can live with it no doubt.
