I've just installed Saline on my guest partition (the 45th distro I've tried!) so I though a little feedback would be in order.

I was generally impressed with the installer, the accessability of the manual during installation, the ease of installing codecs and video drivers, the boot speed, and the stability of the packages.

The only problem was that Parole played an mp4 video very slowly and choppily, although that program had given no problem in other distros.

Previous Debian experience led me to go to the "software sources" section, although I should have tested to see if there was a default setting (unlike Debian). I chose the option to find a British repository, only to have it fail! After I switched to "best repository", I tried Synaptic. I looked for an alternative to Parole in Media, only to draw a blank. I finally spotted Mplayer lurking in Graphics, but it failed to install because of missing dependencies. Was there something that should have been enabled that wasn't? I should say that if I test a distro, I pretend to be a novice and stick to the GUI tools and available documentation.

On the whole I was impressed: potentially the best Debian derivative along with Mepis.

There have been problems with the Euro repositories. You might try the "Main" repository. Other Multimedia are present including VLC and XBMC to mention a few. Be sure to Reload and run the AutoUpdate in the Panel. If you feel you have not gotten all of the Codecs, open Terminal and run
Code:
gksu installrestrictedmultimedia

The dependencies problem was cured by switching to the main mirror. This has always been a reason for not recommending Debian to beginners: having to mess about setting up repositories and the general muddle of synaptic. Where does one look in such a welter of categories? Multimedia or videos, WWW or WWW contributors?

When I tried mplayer, I got the following results:
1. From Thunar, sound but no pictures (not even a blank screen: just the control panel)
2. From a terminal
a. flv played without sound
b. mp4 played well, but with no controls.
