 Feedback Revised User Manual
« Thread Started on Jan 24, 2011, 10:53am »

First of all I think the user manual is very helpfull for new users, especially I like the listing of common bash commands.
I would like to see two things in the manual:
1. If the the user needs more help he might consult in the forum and put a link to the forum in the manual.
2. A small chapter about package management from the commandline: correct usage of apt-get and aptitude (this may open a small discussion here), imho aptitude is not the best way because how it handles dependencies. ::) Then point out not to use repos from ubuntu as this may break the system easily, apt-get autoclean, apt-get autoremove, orphaner, etc.
I think this is very important as there are a lot of linux users accustomed to manage things the ubuntu-way and tend to mix things up.

I wish you the best of luck getting me to stop using aptitude my friend ;) I will add a link to the forums in the user manual that is a good idea. Clean and whatnot really isn't an issue as the AutoUpdate script runs aptitude clean every time the system is updated.
So far for changes I have:
Add Printer Guide
Shift Insert key combination for pasting into terminal. Under the tips and tricks section
Link to forums
Someone is going through and fixing up my horrific English and rewording things that aren't explained well as we speak.

Seems 1.0 is a bit rough I will have to admit, but 1.1 is shaping up quite nicely. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. I will consider adding a guide on aptitude in the user manual. I would prefer not to use the word Ubuntu anywhere in the documentation as there is nothing Ubuntu about the system.

Of course this was meant only as a suggestion. And you are right, mentioning the word ubuntu is not so good, maybe using third party repos would be better or something like that. ;)

Except I include third party repositories in Saline OS. Though I only use trusted ones like Debian Multimedia, Remastersys and WineHQ.

I couldn't disagree with you Anthony. One of the best installers out their is from Debian. But having said that it would never work with Slackware, OpenSuse or Red Hat because of the different packaging systems they have. Ubuntu has the worst installer. I concider yours just fair. keep in mind I'm OldSchool. I prefer to cfdisk and mkfs.ext3 after then install. So if you where to add an expert mode to your installer you should include cfdisk and gparted. I find gparted confusing at times and avoid it when I can.

The installer is the work of fragadelic on this forum and his forum over at http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/forums/ . It does in fact include a text only mode though I don't document that personally. The remastersys installer is almost as is in Saline OS, there are only a couple of patches applied for misc brokenness of Xfce 4.6.2. Thankfully this brokenness goes away with Xfce 4.8. The Remastersys installer is a really cool piece of software, it maybe a bit basic but thats not such a bad thing is it?

I'm thinking real hard about getting this OS out of a VM so I will check that out. A VM is good for a test ride but if you want get the true feel of the road the rubber needs to hit the hard drive ??? or something like that. LOL

I like to break out a /boot partition (out of habit mostly :) and couldn't see how to do that with the installer so I just have a / for that, which is fine of course. But, can this be done or didn't I know what I was doing with the installer?

I started to translate manual, and I found a mistake, that may be confusing for newbies. It says on top of page 5: is at least 32,0000 MiB. I think it should be 32,000 MiB.

Maybe one more on the same page: set the size to 2000 to 3000 MiB. Shouldn't it be: from 2000 to 3000 MiB?

You might add a section on sound, this seems to be a point of interest recently.
