 Font Rendering
« Thread Started on Jun 7, 2012, 12:58pm »

One of the big advantages of SalineOS over an Ubuntu-based distro is performance, even more so with a light DE such as Xfce.

Having installed SalineOS, I also notice a downside...font rendering. Fonts are simply not as crisp/sharp as on Ubuntu-based distros. That said, I've installed another Debian-based distro (SolusOS) in which patches to libcairo2, fontconfig and libxft2 have been made, and the fonts are now on par with the 'Buntu's.

So my question is, would it be possible to improve the font rendering in SalineOS 2.0?

Thanks for a great distro and looking forward to 2.0!

I don't have Ubuntu handy but looking at Linuxmint I don't see much difference.

Maybe it's subjective. Might have more to do with the browser font settings.
Or LibreOffice. Also text editors. Those are where I spend most of my time.

I know I fiddle with fonts until I'm happy. And with AntiAliasing.

Perhaps Anthony has some magic that can be applied.

I've turned on AntiAliasing, Hinting (Slight or Medium), RGB, LCD, etc. and though it looks a bit better, I can't get it to look nearly as sharp or clear as with Ubuntu/Mint/derivatives or SolusOS (debian-based GNOME).

I really like SalineOS and that's why I'd like it to look as good as it performs. Maybe I'm overly picky but to me there's an obvious difference.

We need picky people to find out where improvements can be made. :)

Seems like two identical systems, set up and run side by side would be great
to look for performance differences and tweaks. And probably someone
with better vision and memory than I.
