There is http://debgen.simplylinux.ch/ for Debian. Copy and paste what you need keeping the distro specific repos at the top. It is handy, but it gives no speed check. I use the speed checker in Synaptic.

@Malspa, I had PCLinuxOS Phoenix for awhile. It was Xfce, but, in 32 bit. I heard they might have something out in 64 Bit, but, have not seen anything so far. Phoenix, compared to even 32 bit SalineOS, is slow.

Thanks! I knew about the Debian Sources List Generator, but I didn't know about the "Select Best Server" tool in Synaptic! Considering how long I've using Synaptic, you'd think I'd know about that one! For anyone else who doesn't know about it, check this page: http://blog.mypapit.net/2007/08/how-to-g....h-synaptic.html
Also found out about two apps that are supposed to be good for this: netselect-apt and apt-spy. They're in the Squeeze repos.
I think that Synaptic's "Select Best Server" tool, as well as netselect-apt and apt-spy, will each choose the fastest server for you, while the apt-sources-update script in PCLOS gives you a list (fastest to slowest) that you then choose from.

Interesting. I wonder why that is (and I wonder if I'd notice the difference here).
Not to confuse you, I mean to say it is slower than SalineOS in 32 bit. Since I wrote that I checked their site and found a 64 bit Test Live CD which is KDE and it takes forever to load, though that may be because I was using the Live CD instead of trying to install it. I don't use Virtual Disk and have no desire to install it either. I have an affinity for KDE, too many bugs in the past.

@beardedragon -- Yeah, I see. I stick with 32-bit versions, which I think is fine for my situation. Only 2 GB RAM on both my machines (both 64-bit CPU, though), anyway, which is perfectly cool for the things I do here.

It might make a difference after all. The 64 bit versions take advantage of your dual processors and the speed advantage is notable. I have only 3GB RAM. The old argument, that there are more applications available and compatible in 32 bit installations, hardly applies anymore. Ultimately it is your decision to make, but, I would advise using a 64 Bit system on a machine that is capable of taking advantage of it.

Interesting. I frequently read up on the "32-bit or 64-bit?" question and consider the various opinions. But maybe speed isn't much of an issue here; for example, I can see the difference in speed between KDE4 and, say, Openbox, or AwesomeWM, or Xfce, but I'm still very happy using KDE4. Seems that speed is more important to some people than to others.

I consider myself a Power User, in that I do several tasks at the same time. This is easier to see the difference when you have dual processors. Things like playing music, downloading, copying and writing with autosave plus watching my E-mail browser all at the same time was difficult in a 32 bit system. Something was always lacking. That's a lot of open windows even for my 21 1/2" screen.

of the distros I have I frequently use caine 1.5, ctk arch, pinguyos 11. debian 6.0, and now saline. I have also used mint 7, myah, puppy, ubuntu and knoppix distros. they all have their pros and cons i guess but they are still better than the win hosed os's
Ahh, I didn't want to admit how much I loved the viruses, and the ingenious crashes.
Just wait until Windows XP goes out of security support, and all at once the hax0rz release the payloads they have been saving up for awhile. The chaos that will ensue should make for good entertainment ... As long as you are on the sideline that is.
For those of you wondering when Windows XP finally dies, you can mark this day down: April 8, 2014 (Of course not everyone will stop using it on that day but the viruses and attacks will beat it to death relatively quickly).
