| | Have you installed Saline to keep an old machine? « Thread Started on Mar 8, 2011, 11:55am » | |
Hi all,
My name is John Eischeid, and I am a freelance writer living in New York. I am currently working on piece about sustainable computing, and I was wondering if anyone has started using SalineOS to keep an old machine out of a landfill or from being "recycled." I have found other Linux users and developers who have. It's important to note that I haven't found anyone to publish the piece yet, but I have gotten some interest.
My work has been published by the New York Times and Scientific American Online. You can find links to clips here: www.johneischeid.com/clips .
You can respond to this thread, or send me an email at john [at] johneischeid.com .
Thanks!

I do a lot of work fixing up old machines and scrapping them for functioning parts. This is one of the reasons I am such a huge fan of Xfce, as it brings modern functionality like desktop effects to older beat up machines. It also allows me to stretch the life of my personal machine. All the SalineOS image builds originated from an Athlon XP 4400+ dual core machine with a scant 2 gigabytes of ram. It used to have 3 gigabytes of RAM but one chip went bad and I haven't really noticed it slowing down any so I never bothered to replace it.

I have several machines. I run Debian and it's derivatives because I spend my money chasing tropical plants, tropical gurls and tropical food. You ought to try this OS on an Intel i7. Whew..............

I am French (sorry for my writing) and I like to test distros on old PC, first.
Even a PIV, 1.4 GHz with 512 KB Ram and a "standard" VGA card (S3 without 3D) is fast enough with SalineOS; the last LibreOffice suite (3.3.2.4) and the DVD playback are running well too!
I tested the new slack 13.37, aptosid, crunchBang, PuppyLinux, Frugalware, Salix, SlitaZ and AntiX-M11-686 (very good too) and I still prefer the SalineOS ease of installation & use (and backup too)...
Now, I have to test the distributions on an old PIII; may be the AntiX-M11-486 version will be faster ?
Any way, thanks to Anthony Nordquist for this very nice distro!

Nope, i have installed it because it's the best distro if you go for Xfce.
