Hm, I see LibreOffice is available from Backports. Anybody tried removing OpenOffice and installing LibreOffice in Saline? I'm not sure that I want to try doing that, but just wondering if anyone else has, and if so, how it went.

I did. It worked fine.
However, I would suggest removing OpenOffice first, then installing libreoffice3.

Sure does. I removed OOo and installed LibO-3.3.3 from the DocumentFoundation. Works great. Have been using it since LO-3.2.1

Installing LibreOffice from backports does in fact require purging OpenOffice.org. The transitional packages that would smooth out the upgrade will not be backported for various reasons. I confirmed this with the backport maintainer just earlier today. The backport for LibreOffice works really well but currently will have to be installed manually.
Some language packages and out of tree extras are not included in backports at this time. They may or may not be made available in the future.

Good info, thanks for the replies! I'll sit on it for awhile and think about whether or not I want to install it. I've been using it in other distros, but for the simple stuff I do, I'm not sure that it matters whether I use OpenOffice of LibreOffice.

I tried to install LibreOffice but didn't succeed. First I purged OpenOffice (# apt-get --purge remove openoffice*), then tried to install LibreOffice with Synaptic and the backports repos enabled, but ran into a revolving dependency hell. Then I tried apt-get (# apt-get install openoffice) but ran into what looked like the same dependency hell.
Then I found this in another post: (# aptitude -t squeeze-backports install libreoffice) and it looks like it has worked.
The only thing I wonder is, will the LibreOffice packages upgrade normally?

You will get updates to Libre Office through the backports repository for the lifespan of Squeeze. When Wheezy comes out you should be able to upgrade without issue. If manual intervention is needed I will code it into the upgrade script for 1.0 to 2.0.
