 qt4-fsarchiver GUI restore iso
« Thread Started on Jan 6, 2012, 5:07am »

I'm afraid I've been butchering Anthony's superb creation to make a qt4-fsarchiver restore iso.
The html help file is still work in progress but I'd like some feedback please.
http://lin.me.uk/iso/qt4-fsarchiver-saline-12-01-04.iso

qt4-fsarchiver is a GUI frontend for fsarchiver which is a cli partition backup software package for Linux partitions, not NTFS Windows partitions.

If you have only 1 Linux OS installed on your machine you need a live CD to do a restore so I have been attempting to create one for this Mint thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=197&t=89189

I have customized the standard desktop with a custom menu and a few other bits and would like to have some feedback on this please

Thank you for your time and patience.

The menu is great, but for some reason I can't stop laughing at the Mount Partitions entry...

I think the concept is good and I'd like to see what petrik can do with it.

I can't do much with the panel the launchers are in, it was a quick hack of something else and hasn't had any development for 18 months.
http://gtk-apps.org/content/show.php?content=102890&forumpage=11, it's written in python which is cross platform i think ;)

I think it could be the bases of a shell/unity type desktop if you had a large desktop sized panel as a container for the one(s) panel on my desktop and a control to select which sub panel to display.

The menus are surprisingly easy to do, everything is contained in the folder /home/user/xfce-menus.

a problem i haven't been able to resolve it is in the /home/user/xfce-menus/desktop.menu
Quote:
<Menu>
<Name>DeskTop</Name>
<AppDir>/home/user/xfce-menus/applications/</AppDir>
<DefaultDirectoryDirs/>
<DefaultMergeDirs/>
Instead of
Quote:
/home/user/xfce-menus/applications/
I want to use the tilde
Quote:
~/xfce-menus/applications/
I've never got the alias to work so i've always hard coded stuff. :'(

After several error messages "Cannot connect" etc. because I am using a Dongle with WIFI that is not supported yet in Squeeze. I managed to get it up and running without internet. Might tell ppl that they need Ethernet or something to connect.

Did you tried $HOME instead of tilde? It works in my menu. And petrik can't do anything about it, maybe petrek will do, if you tell him what you are trying to achieve ;)

Very valid point but please could you draft the message for me, I think they would understand you whereas me :'( or just edit the post for me please, whatever is the easiest
I think the best idea is to have more wireless drivers available or is that not possible?

My hero, thank you :), It's sh*t not understanding manuals so your help is invaluable.
I thought it was possible and it makes a huge difference to these menu/desktop things i'm trying to do as I can contain everything I'm doing in one dir with simple access. ;)

In Sid right now is the driver I used. Anthony has assured me when SalineOS 2.0 comes out it will have those installed. I am not sure how to draft that message. I should think any kind of restore would only have what is available at present. I used remastersys and made my own recovery disk including the driver. This is my first foray into qt4-fsarchiver. Keep going in the direction your nose goes, you are doing alright.

I just wish the qt4-fsarchiver devs had used clonzilla as a base not fsarchiver, fsarchiver can't handle ntfs files and the ability to handle ntfs files is very important.

I'm going to go make a video to have a rest from the iso business and let my little brain clear.

And a big thank you for your feed back and encouragement. :)

I have 2 ntfs partitions mounted in my home/username/documents folder. Will fsarchiver backup those ntfs partitions if I select the entire partition (home) and can I backup to the ntfs partitions themselves and or restore from them back to my ext4 ones? I don't see any way to exclude them from the gui other than selecting everything else individually.
Plus qt4-fsarchiver already has a bootable live iso. What exactly are you making?

I don't want or need to do that. On second thought (thank you very much Richard), as long as the ntfs-3g is not installed it should then ignore those 2 folders as they are entirely ntfs drives. But, my sda1 is ntfs (xp) so I can still use my acronis boot disc which is exactly what I've already done for my all my sda parts-I just back up each one separately. As long as i recreate the partitioning scheme as before it should work fine.

@debby,
You only need ntfs-3g if you wish to write/create an ntfs partition.
Quote:

No. That is, it is safer to boot from a LiveCD/USB or another partition and then backup your target partition. In that case, those 2 mounted partitions will not be mounted. If you mount them before, then they will be backed up.

However, you can back them up separately (or combine them in the *.fsa file by nameing both on the CLI or in the GUI that is being discussed.)

I think ntfs-3g is installed by SalineOS. I have it and I didn't install it on purpose. :)
So it should work as desired if your ntfs partitions are mounted.

Hopefully that helps. I hope it is understandable.

My ntfs drives are my largest and impossible to backup. I only need my smallest 320gig (sda) with my dual boot backed up. Since they (the other two drives) are mounted, in session it would ignore them without the plugin I'm assuming.
I already use an acronis boot disc. So if i booted to fs boot disc it would not see the backup image residing on ntfs? That is without the plugin. Yeah I know it's a little confusing but if I had just one more 2tb drive I could format everything ext4.

I've been writing my backups to my data NTFS partition which normally has a symbolic link in my user folder but I disable that in fstab before backing up.
I have my home folder in root but never store data there, all my profiles are stored there plus my downloads go straight there

Hope I'm not confusing things, I'm a bit tired

I think I got it. So in order to backup my linux parts without the mounted ntfs drives I would have to essentially unmount them first, or use the fsarchiver boot disc itself. Acronis is working fine so far but I know it does not recognize ext4 file system so not sure how the restore would actually even work. It should though. It's just 1's and 0's. I do have one cdrw I can test fs with which I may eventually. Thanks ukbrian.
