I modified my post after you quoted it. I should have read your fine print and i'm pretty sure I installed x86_64.

This is strange, currently I am on 32 bit and don't have access to an update either. I uncommented the main Debian repository and ran aptitude update and still don't have an update available.

I installed "packagesearch" from the repositories and used it to search for "weather". It found the 0.7.3-3-squeeze1 version.

Where would I find the log of recent updates?

Thank you beardedragon for your responses. I feel like I should mark this thread solved, but I originally posted it to share an alternative solution and still like and use the weather apps I found.

Perhaps you or Anthony could start a new thread and recommend a preferred method of pulling in new updates.

Edit

The reason I didn't find the squeeze1 version was that I didn't have "Proposed Updates" checked.

The fix for bug #647749 reads
Quote:
xfce4-weather-plugin (0.7.3-3+squeeze1) stable; urgency=low

* debian/patches:
- 00_license added, change the license key to get a working plugin back.
closes: #647749

This will not work after TWC ends its XMLOAP service and a new provider that abides by the DFSG is used for future versions of this plugin. So it is a bandaid for the Debian package and it will take XFCE developers to come up with an alternative plugin.

Well, here we are at the end of April and 0.7.3-3+bt1 is still the current package and still doesn't work. Here's a work-around: install the xfce4-xfapplet-plugin and gnome-applets. You'll get a boatload of gradoo, but you can install the xfapplet into your panel, then plug Gnome's weather applet (Weather Report 2.30.0) into the xfapplet and not have to look out the window to see if it's raining.

xfce4-weather-plugin works perfectly. No workaround needed.
