 Iceweasel and Icedove
« Thread Started on Mar 18, 2012, 5:39am »

Hello

I woud like to use Google and its products as little as ever possibel and are therefore absolutely not keen to use their browser. Consequently I wanted to install Iceweasel. But what a shock when I found the edition 3.x in the repos. The newest I got this week with Mint 12 KDE is 11.0!! So 3.x is probably nearing an year behind times. Equal situation with Icedove.

Why is this? And how do I get to the most up-to-date versions? Necessarily I am absolutely happy to install Firefox/Thunderbird and add the correct ppa, if you are so kind to give me the link.

Greetings
Arran

Debian does not have a PPA system, that is Ubuntu specific. You can get the newest Iceweasel by adding the line below to /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports iceweasel-release

Then run these commands as root:
apt-get update
apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel

You can also install Firefox by going here:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

After downloading simply extract the archive anywhere in your home folder and then double click on firefox inside the folder to run it. Thunderbird can be installed the same way. SalineOS includes the latest Icedove available to Debian Squeeze.

Sorry, of course, I forgot. Iceweasel is certainly not a problem, here I have a diffent profile for each OS. Whereas with Thunderbird I have one profile for all OS, but that implies to have always the same version, due to the differences in add-ons. I am expecially dependent on Kaosmos's add-on «MoreFunctionsForAddressbook», as I have set-up quite a sophisticated system of address books and I did not yet manage to import my seven address books in any other Addressbook and retain the information. And rewriting the over 2000 addresses? No way.

You can grab whatever version of Thunderbird you need here:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

Download the version you want and extract the archive to your home folder somewhere.
Move the profile you wish to use to /home/your-user-name/.mozilla
Finally open Thunderbird by navigating to the directory you extracted the archive to and double click on thunderbird.

Thanks for this link. I go for it tomorrow.

However, in the .thunderbird (usually) will only be the «profiles.ini» file, directing to the main profile at /media/anwender/profiles/bruno/8charact.default. This way is proven, so I have in every distribution I am using the same TB profile without any other synchronisation. That works perfectly too with Firefox. A mixture between Firefox/Thunderbird and Iceweasel/Icedove is not working properly, because the «Icy» addons are different to the traditional ones, *.xul or so. I probably work with Thunderbird and Iceweasel

Welcome to the forum Arran

I think you'll enjoy your new life with SalineOS, if you like breaking things be prepared to be disappointed, she's a pretty tough bird to break.[image]

I use the Firefox ESR(Extended Support Release) 10.? from here http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all.html
If you unpack it in your user folder it creates a folder "/home/Arran/firefox" if you double click on the file "/home/Arran/firefox/firefox" in that folder firefox will start up.

If you open up a text editor and paste this text into it and then save it as "firefox.desktop" at "/home/Arran/.local/share/applications", Firefox should appear in your menu under Network
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=Firefox
Comment=Browser
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
Exec=/home/Arran/firefox/firefox
Icon=/home/Arran/firefox/icons/mozicon128.png
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=false

If you do the same with this text and save it as "firefox-profile.desktop" to the same place you will have a "Profile Manager" item in the menu so you can create a profile for yourself that you can copy into any other OS :)
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=Profile Manager
Comment=Firefox Profile Manager
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
Exec=/home/Arran/firefox/firefox -P
Icon=/home/Arran/firefox/icons/mozicon128.png
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=false
No more installing extensions and customizing Firefox every time you try another distro or do a fresh install, a great time saver.

If you want any help or have any problems just ask.

Edit you can do the same with Thunderbird from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/
