Display in Settings doesn't execute [SOLVED]
« Thread Started on Aug 1, 2012, 10:26pm »

Running Sos-1.6 up-to-date w/3.2 backport kernel.

Calling up the Display app from the Xfce4 Settings Manager
just gives me a gray window --no settings.

Is it a separate app? Where? What?

Anyone else see this?
Or maybe I just broke it.
Everything else is fine.

Try booting the standard kernel and see if it comes back.

No joy there.
Still get the same empty gray panel.
Actually, it's been this way for a while,
but haven't really needed it until I tried to connect to a video beam the other day.

I have grandr which works ok.
Just wondered when/why the Display app broke.

Not much to compare it to, still using ver. 1.5 w/fix for Thunar & original kernel. With that kernel you have are you running a different version of Xfce like 4.10?

@bd,
No, just the kernel from backports.
I suppose if no one else has seen this,
it is just something I did? or installed?

Thanks for the replies.
I suppose it can wait until v2.0
or until a slow weekend,
to back it up and try it again.

Should I modify the subject to something else?
It isn't really a problem, just a curiosity.
I am running Anthony's AutoUpdateTesting,
but imagine I'm not the only one?

This isn't caused by the update scripts, and I don't believe its being caused by your newer kernel either (Though this is still a possibility). Grandr might have caused something funky, or it is possibly an incompatibility with the currently used video chipset driver. You can attempt to launch just the display settings dialog from Applications > Settings > Display

Of much more use for debugging, is to run it in a terminal window, just open a terminal and execute this: xfce4-display-settings

It's not available in the Settings menu, (since
only from within the Xfce4-Settings-Manager.

That's what I was looking for. :)
Yes, it executes from a terminal.

But it does not start from the Xfce4-Settings-Manager.

No issue here.

Code:
$ uname -r
2.6.32-5-686

Wondering if changing to a different theme or style makes any difference.

Well now, I am dumbfounded. I was expecting an error message when you attempted to run it from a terminal, and it should have an entry in the Settings menu. Perhaps try running this in the terminal and try to access the display entry: xfce4-settings-manager

Are you by chance using the .desktop files I have in git? This could possibly be my fault if that is the case.

Possibly. I think I copied in some of them to try out.
Maybe got something that I shouldn't have?

This would explain everything you are experiencing. The desktop files in git are slightly modified versions of those in use on Debian Wheezy, and the Xfce settings manager is using different entries than those in use on 4.6.2. Try pasting the below in mousepad and saving it as /home/your-username/.local/share/applications/xfce-display-settings.desktop

That worked like a charm.
Now have the Display working as expected from the Settings menu.

Note1: I had to create the .desktop file since it did not exist.
Note2: In the above: change Desktop Entry] --> [Desktop Entry]

I promise :-[
not to add strange stuff, any more, never again, ...er, maybe,....

Modified my post and fixed it. Is it still not working when launched from the Xfce4 settings manager?

It is working as expected from the Settings Manager.
Thanks, again.

So few things to fix in SalineOS/Debian stable that I suppose we have to break something.
Reminds me of the cartoon about the vultures, "Patience? I'm gonna go kill something."
