Hi,
I know the longer the better etc etc BUT, with a 12 or more character password with numbers and extras like commas etc what are the chances of someone breaking in to our machines using Debian and then Saline as our Operating System ? Am I correct in my thinking that they have to get past that Login Password to get access ?
I have a very, very good reason for asking but don't wish to go into to here. If your extremely good at security on a linux machine feel free to pm me.
Thank you so much for ALL your kind assistance, as always,
Chiff.

Depends. If they have physical access to the machine, may not matter too much. A liveCD could get access. If you really want to lock it down, probably need to encrypt the partition with your data.
However, I am not extremely good at security, but this is fairly common knowledge.

Chiff the chances of someone breaking in through the internet are really quite slim. You are just as secure running SalineOS as you are Debian Squeeze. (Maybe a little more depending how much you know about security and what you choose in Debian's installer)

I know very little about Linux security and what is in the installer that I have missed. How should I have set it up ?

Nothing of interest in my installer. The Debian installer gives you a lot more options. I made most those choices for you when I setup SalineOS. You should be fine, I wouldn't worry too much about security. Just don't input commands, install .debs or run scripts from untrusted sources.
