You guys are awesome. I put borg in my startup and foo in a launcher in my 3rd hiding bar using 'wine /foo location...'. Works perf. Sorting the menu to clean it up a little proves too much for me to comprehend yet (now i have synaptic only in 'other'-lol) between the edit menu exe and alacarte. nbd.

It's so much easier to just create a launcher. GTK based audio aps are horrific. There really aren't that many good choices at all. i love both gtk and qt as they both have software strengths.

I would just like to get some input on how people feel about supporting the setup of Desura through the SalineOS installer and SalineOS System Utilities instead of hosting game packages on my own repository. Desura is a game distribution system that has a Linux native client, it functions much the way Steam does. I haven't looked at it since its earlier beta builds, but it is looking very good these days. You can go snag it right now and use it http://www.desura.com/

I am really liking it personally.

Sure. More funcionality with less overhead.
I'm not a gamer but I imagine there are many who are.
So long as they are optional I see nothing objectionable.

It's ok, although they don't have many free games. Also it would be nice to have some good tool for configuring and installing windows games in wine. For example years ago I could install Morrowind in Ubuntu 6.06 and it was playable, but in Squeeze it doesn't install at all.

Anything with Nixie in it is interesting, for obvious reasons. I don't see the relevance though.

Desura is really cool and it really is trying to fill a need for Linux users, and has a commercial element that should keep them around for the foreseeable future. It is rather new and is just starting to catch on and get the all the opensource projects on board. I have a feeling by the time 2.0 comes around almost all of them will be listed and supported by Desura. I am already trying to get in contact with some of the game Devs who aren't listed there and asking them to get listed, if they aren't interested in building the packages for Desura (They use statically link libraries for the most part) I can build these for them.

In fact, it would actually be easier for me to build a few statically linked packages for game devs than it would be to make Debian packages for all the latest game releases. I also think Desura will give the end user a better experience than just using the package manager. Essentially the packages Desura uses are makeself archives like the ones I released for installing the Thunar custom actions and whatnot. This allows updates direct from the Developers which is exactly what I would do with Debian packages should I use them.

I don't have anything against commercial sites, I just can't buy online, and surely there are others like me. Don't know their plans, so I wrote that it would be good to have more possibilities to install games, and windows games are easier to buy in normal shops, also many users already have some collections. Possibility for easy playing windows games will attract more users I think.

Desura has a bunch of FOSS games listed as well as commercial, and I firmly believe more FOSS games will jump on board in the coming months as Desura gains popularity. You can go install it on top of 1.x any version and try it out. As for commercial games through WINE, winetricks handles this to some extent as they are working on bringing the wisotool installation scripts to the winetricks interface (Most of these are done I believe). All the WINE install stuff from 1.x will be re-written to work through SalineOS system utilities and will include creating a menu entry for winetricks.

I must try once again then. Last time I tried it was uninstallable, although Morrowind is listed as supported. I tried also with playonlinux with the same result. Maybe I'll try on 32bit Saline this time.

SalineOS 1.6 AMD64 got some love in that I am now shipping a great deal more ia32 compatibility libs. Thus the images bloated up more, but whatever is needed to make it work.

Great work on a nice distro!

I really like the idea of SalineOS; The stability of Debian compromised only slightly by packages from Backports. As far as I know SalineOS is the only distro taking that route. Usually distros are either based on pure Stable or Testing, but sometimes also on Unstable. Since I personally consider Testing too unstable and Stable too far behind (most of the time), SalineOS provides a good compromise.

However, what I would like to see for 2.0 are other DEs out-of-the-box. I don't know why the guys behind SalineOS prefer XFCE. Maybe it is because of personal preference, speed, the route Gnome is going, or something else, but for me it is not the number one choice. I really like Gnome 2.32, but I know it is a dead-end. However, if you guys could provide us with MATE customized similarly like your XFCE version, personally I would probably switch to SalineOS right away.

I know you have only a limited amount of time available, but my suggestion is a MATE spin out-of-the box for version 2.0.

Thanks.

Just curious, what functionality from MATE you're missing in Xfce?

Seems to me that sticking with Xfce as the default is best for accomplishing this goal. Just my opinion. If Anthony wants to add spins with other default DEs, and has the time, that's his business, but I like the current focus and direction of this distro.

I'm comfortable using any DE, but I don't quite get the attraction to MATE. Seems to be mainly for people who don't want to give up GNOME 2. With Debian Squeeze, I'm still going back and forth between using GNOME 2 and AwesomeWM, but I can't say that I'll miss GNOME 2 when Wheezy goes to Stable. I think I'll go with Xfce in Wheezy (I want to do a Debian Wheezy Xfce installation and compare that to a SalineOS 2.0 installation, just for the heck of it), but maybe I'll add GNOME 3 to Wheezy later.

I use Xfce because I don't care about any other Desktop Environments. I will not be releasing spins of SalineOS with different DEs since I simply don't like using them and by default am the wrong person to release such a thing. If the future works out as well as I hope, maybe someone else will do a little fork of the SalineOS utilities and put them on top of another DE to make their own distro. For me I can't stand to use anything but Xfce for more than a week before I run back home. I have used them all and continue to check them out. Enlightenment is the only other DE I actually quite like, and the only one I would be likely to work on a spin or derivative of in the future.

Please, no holding your breath for this to come to pass.
