 SalineOS installer
« Thread Started on May 22, 2012, 10:17am »

The reason for my recent post asking how to install the latest installer from the github was because I wanted to make sure I had updated the installer correctly as I had come across a possible glitch.

If I do a remastersys of my OS and then an install with the ISO it gives me the default desktop including both panels, it doesn't install the desktop the ISO was created with.

If I use SalineOS Backup and then do an install it installs the desktop correctly.

The new installer and backup installers are a joy to use with the new screen forms.

I was pleasantly surprised when using the Saline installer that when I gave the new partition a label in gparted it installed with that label.

The new installer doesn't work 100% with the current Remastersys, it might for the next version whenever I see it in the wild. The question I have is do you get the SalineOS default or Xfce default. If you get the SalineOS default then the installer is working as I intended it to, and you will need to move the files and folders from /home/your-user-name to /etc/skel.

I copied the contents of my user folder into /etc/skel overwriting when asked and the installed system was with my original desktop ;D

I only had to add 1 line to my fstab and a line to my sudoers and everything was mint. ;D

The more I use your installer the more I like it, it's best of breed I think. ;D

The only one I think might be a bit confusing to a novice is the screen where you select the grub partition, I'll have a think on that one, also would your magic array give you the file system to display. If it's simple then I think it's worth adding next time your working around there. :)

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping me, I have seen /etc/skel mentioned with refracta, now I understand it more thanks to you. :) They've got refracta snapshot working on Wheezy but I haven't tried it.

Would it be possible to populate the labels in your installer from an SQLite database so it's multi language?

Love and Peace

In theory I could populate all the dialogs using translations, but said translations don't exist and it is more work than I currently have time for. I may consider this for 3.0.

I didn't mean for you to gather the translations, I was thinking more that the utilities are written ready to use a database, I would start with just english(en_GB - en_US) in there as long as the headers are populated by a database your ready for the future, Ikey will be treading the same path.

I watched a install video that a Spanish guy done for Ikeys thing and it immediately struck me how limited your users are if it only has english language in the installer.

Your product is exceptionally good expect it to grow especially South America.

I only help/follow the stayers not the flash in the pans, you have a big future!

I done an install video for Ikey 10 days ago and it's had 316 views on youtube already, half from folk searching youtube, I also posted .7z video files on my site for low bandwidth folk and there's been nearly 300 downloads.

As soon as you have the makings for 2 I'll do the same for you.

Happy days

Sorry if I'm a bit strong :-[ I just done another all nighter and it looks like another one tonight. so I'll stop making post until I slow down a bit. :-[

If I may, don't use any database for this, simple text files are the best for this purpose.

No offense Petrek but I have spent an enormous time watching a database professional manipulating data

I want a simple table with these fields
Country #the index field
Name
GenericName
Comment
GenericComment

I want a routine so that I can throw data like this at it

Country,Name,GenericName,Comment,GenericComment
en_GB,Grub-Doctor,Grub-Doctor,Restore or Create your Grub2 Boot Loader to any MBR,Restore or Create your Grub2 Boot Loader to any MBR
en_US,Grub-Doctor,Grub-Doctor,Restore or Create your Grub2 Boot Loader to any MBR,Restore or Create your Grub2 Boot Loader to any MBR

it,bootloader utilità,bootloader utilità,Ripristinare o Crea il tuo Boot Loader Grub2 a qualsiasi MBR,Ripristinare o Crea il tuo Boot Loader Grub2 a qualsiasi MBR
pl,Narzędzie bootloader,Narzędzie bootloader,Przywracanie lub Załóż grub2 Boot Loadera do dowolnego MBR,Przywracanie lub Załóż grub2 Boot Loadera do dowolnego MBR

Like that is good enough to start with but I want to save multiple versions of all of the labels so you have a table of all the fields that we get off folk for each language

So that a native speaker can pick the best one.

I know this is .desktop data but I will collect all the labels the installer need tomorrow.

I'm doing a video of refracta backing up lmde and then installing the iso but I'll make a start tomorrow.

I said I wasn't going to say any more tonight while I'm this positive, I soon broke that promise didn't I.

No offense, although I have spent enormous time manipulating database data, and passed exam at the university, so one can probably call me professional in this matter :P You have still errors in polish translation.

I only pasted that together quickly.
They way you start off is the most important thing else your liable to bump into brick walls.

Humour me and let me start off my way first so you can see what I'm trying to do, much better than me trying to explain.

:o
That was unexpected Anthony but I think it sums it up.
I'm just looking for a good IDE to put some screen forms together

I loaded up OpenSUSE to try and install kylix(failed) and was amazed that they had got gimp and libreoffice installed and the iso still fitted on a cd

I was quite taken with their installer, on the first screen F2 you can change the language/ locale.
I don't think you went into a Partition manager, all the screens were just gathering parameters to use at the end.

I took screenshots of the different install screens if you want to see them just ask.

They used large screens but I would have used a Modal? screen with a header at the top that displayed the parameters as the different screens gathered them.

I'm fighting with my desktop machine at the moment, I'm unhappy with it and expecting a problem so I'm rejigging it but it's fighting back. ::)

When I have news on the language front I'll let you know.

That link sums up everything I think about databases in a way I can't put into words myself. I started using Xapian for a project that has been shelved for the time being, if you are going to database/index something I would suggest using Xapian instead of the more common databases. If you don't need more than 50,000 entries, Xapian is way better suited than anything else. The xapian-tools package provides pretty much everything you need to get started with it.

Currently I don't maintain anything that stores enough data to justify a database, but if I did it would be Xapian.

Xapian is now a speed dial for future reference.
I like that it's cross platform.

I understand your views on databases but I have done so much with them in the past.
This site is totally written from an access or visual basic database which makes site maintenance a breeze. http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/index.htm

A guy in Ikey's group is a pro database dev and is very interested in what I'm proposing so things will progress at his speed using his tools of choice and the first thing we will address is the installer.
