Well I went from saline 1.7 back to windows 7 simply because I wanted some newer stuff which 1.7 did not allow. I played real nice with the win7 install and STILL it became unstable. Reburned a 1.7 disc and for the life of me it refused to work so I was forced to run the 2.0 which TG does. Oh and it is so much more stable than that tripe windows crap AND gives me access to the newer stuff. Now if I could only afford a newer and more powerful pc so that virtualbox could be a physical reality instead of a dern toy.

I just grabbed a copy of SphinUX CheopX 1.0. http://sourceforge.net/p/sphinux/wiki/Home/
It's a 2.4gig multiarch iso, meaning you can install it to anything from the one iso. Based on Debian testing (w/KDE), it's not compatible with the std deb repos. The maintainers are young egyptian comp scientists who take no monies for their work and have deployed 9 servers across the globe to serve up the OS and it's 30,000+ aps.

The SphinUX OS supports 99% of modern and legacy hardware and peripherals in the market, and more are constantly added. Everything is integrated. SphinUX OS also has an advantage of being able to access the same hardware: "example: Audio card, GPU, etc ..." from different processes simultaneously, this feature resulted in infinite number of sessions with full graphical acceleration for each using shared resources.

SphinUX OS uses the LSX Kernel, a new integration design that is created and implemented to combine a hypervisor's ability to run multiple kernels although it has the caching kernel features, enabling the loaded pre-compiled custom kernels to multiplex over resources and have shared MMU with the fastest IO/AIO compared to other operating systems with the same machine configuration. (What he said)

Live DVD booted perfect on my old shitebox and was as snappy if not snappier than saline. I didn't, and still don't, know what the root pass is so could only get a feel for it. Based upon it's unique architecture I'm considering backing up my saline 2.0 and installing it just for kicks.

The only thing that didn't run on the live dvd for me was FF. Konqueror worked fine though. I use the latest static version of FF anyways so it doesn't and won't ever matter.

Interesting. Reinstalled SalineOS2.0dev because I was housekeeping and wanted it as sda1 (faster response time) I have had many other distros since the last cleanup. The point is after installing and
Code:
sudo aptitude full-upgrade
some things are newer and working better than ever. You are very close my friend.

Strange.

Do you have a USB or DVD with SalineOS-2dev2?
If so, boot it and use the Grub-Doctor from SAL2 on your install of SAL1.
I think, I have seen something similar with SAL1, but couldn't prove it.

I installed SAL2 and used Anthony's Software Update tool to keep it up to date.
If you decide to reinstall, that would be my choice.
It works great for me.

Looking for what, exactly to remove --purge, I ran
Code:
apt-cache policy grub
and
Code:
apt-cache policy grub2
.

The returns were as follows:
Code:
/# apt-cache policy grub2
grub2:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 1.98+20100804-14+squeeze1
Version table:
1.98+20100804-14+squeeze1 0
500 ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main i386 Packages

root@atom-box:/#
root@atom-box:/# apt-cache policy grub
grub:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 0.97-64
Version table:
0.97-64 0
500 ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main i386 Packages

So what should I be removing? BTW, saw no references to xfce in grub.cfg.

It is odd that my semi-transparent terminal window still shows my preferred background even though I am still getting the Debian space cartoon. Weird.

I think there was an update of grub a while back,
with a message to keep the current config or accept the developers.

How to change?
Maybe, in a root console, purge and reinstall grub, but just guessing.
Probably someone else has a better solution.

 xfce behavior changes
« Result #7 on Jun 8, 2013, 12:34am »

Since my last update (I think), xfce has been behaving strangely. My desktop background has reverted to the Debian space cartoon and right clicking no longer brings up the applications menu. The menu can still be accessed from the upper panel, as before. I am using SOS 1.6 on this box.

Anyone else seeing this? Anyone have any insights?

Paul

Don't expect anything from me to backup Windows. I do not own any Windows newer than Windows 2000 professional and have no plans to acquire one.

Anthony removed the option because I guess there was the chance of problems happening with it, I guess you got to be a bit more careful when you shoot for the moon.
Quote:
My general plan is to write Remastering software that isn't just for Debian or even just for major distributions, but one that is as universal as possible. I have been planning this project for quite some time and have put in quite a bit of reading and messing around with different systems to see what that entails (An awe-full lot really). The good news is that most distributions that exist; don't do anything TOO terribly stupid that I can see, but I am sure I will find some when I get testing on them.

The other thing I wonder about is whether it's possible to backup windows OS's and MBR's from a rescue CD/DVD which would give you access to the large volume of windows users and also introduce them to SalineOS.

The one I been using for backing up windows installs is http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx which I guess just compresses the partition contents like qt4-fsarchiver but it uses Linux for a rescue/installer disk.

I also think that it wasn't Ubuntu itself that brought a lot of windows users into Linux but Wubi that gave them a taster without having to master partition managers.

The roadmap Anthony has laid out is awesomely ambitious.

Hi Brian,
Yes, that's the idea: backup & restore any instance.
I'm sure this complicates things, as Anthony mentioned the other day.
It really seems like one of the missing functions --a cloner. :)
