Thank you for this report. It is even more than I needed. I can't tell you right this moment it's cause, but it is apparent that the automatic keyboard setting needs more code to account for azerty layouts. I will have to dig through the source for dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration and try and find out what I am missing. Again thanks for the report.

Hi Anthony,
This fact is not new, I had already met at the beginning of squeeze (the new "testing" two years ago). Yet at that time I was using GDM. But with Slim, it's the same thing. The problem was exactly the same: choose the keyboard was functional once logged in, but first, he remained in "U.S.".
This is not a big problem. But if my contribution can be used to improve it, I'll be delighted. Good luck, Anthony, and congratulations for this wonderful tool.
