| | Cisco Valet Connector AN10 and D-Link DWL-G132 « Thread Started on Feb 11, 2011, 4:25pm » | |
Ok, so I am stuck on Windows 7 at the moment due to network issues. The reason is because we have switched to full wireless at home and the 2 pcs can't connect to the net using any linux. 1 pc is using a Cisco Valet Connector AN10 USB and the other is using a D-Link DWL-G132 also USB.
The Valet connector AN10 and the D-Link DWL-G132 is the only way to use the net at our house now. I need someone to help me figure this out. I have even tried calling Cisco support for this and all I got from them is to be told that I need to either install Windows or buy a Mac. Which is why I am on Windows 7 now. I am sure, at least I hope someone here can help me.
I posted this at another site, but still no real help. I was told to install certain things via synaptic, but I can't use synaptic without the net. Hopefully someone here will have a real answer for this.

You will need to use a special wrapper that translates the Windows driver into something Linux can use. This is called Ndiswrapper you can download an archive with the .deb packages from my web server here (Assuming you are on the i386 version, I have yet to make a 64 bit archive). You can put the archive on an USB stick or mount the Windows partition with Gigolo and move it over to your hard disk.
http://www.salineos.com/Downloads/Ndiswrapper.tar.gz
The order you will need to install the packages in is: dkms common utils ndisgtk
Ndisgtk is a graphical front end that will allow you to skip the command line tinkering. For the D-Link USB driver you will need the file NET8180.INF from the driver CD it came with. If needed I can make an archive of packages for AMD64. The Valet connector probably has an .INI file that should work with Ndiswrapper in the same way.
After Ndiswrapper is setup you can follow the Wicd guide here http://salinelinux.proboards.com/index.c....hread=25&page=1

Actually, I have tried NDISWRAPPER and USBMODESWITCH on several *buntu, Gentoo and Slack and no go, at least for me. But then, I had to dl them from inside Windows and transferred via flash drive.

Sounds like this is possibly an issue with the wireless router or access point not allowing connections to Linux for some reason. The D-Link chip should definitely work with Ndiswrapper, according to the documentation I could dig up.
Edit: I just looked it up you should have native support for the D-Link chipset with SalineOS the needed firmware is included and the driver is included in the kernel image. I believe the issue lies in your wireless router or access point.

Sorry I haven't replied back sooner, been very hectic here. Ok, with the reboot mentioned above, I still have no net. It tells me "No Wireless Networks Found"> So am still back to point 0 on this.
The D-Link is an Atheros chipset and you are right, *buntu should have native support for it.
I also tried it on Win7, but no support for an adapter that has been discontinued. So no drivers. Tried it on my buddy's XP system and after a few minutes got it to work fine.
So, the D-Link will work on XP and lower, but not in 7, Vista or Mac.
Should have worked in *buntus though.....

What does wicd say? You can get to wicd via Applications > Network > Wickd Network Manager.

Can you install Network Manager? It will pull in some gnome stuff but not that much.
Sorry but I have no way of setting up or testing wireless networks.

Taking a look around the net it appears not all drivers support the wireless 802.11n protocol. Please look at the configuration of your router and ensure it will establish 802.11b/g/ connections. This may just fix the DLink issue, the Cisco connector I am gonna go with good luck. See Below.
As a note if I Google Cisco Valet AN10 Linux I get this thread at the top of the page. I have never heard of this chipset and digging up relevant information on it is proving a real pain. (Take a look at Cisco's web page, what a disaster) No Cisco, nobody goes to your web page for press releases. LinuXFroG are you sure its not Cisco Valet AM10? http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Adapter....VVviewprod.ht m The Cisco Valet connectors include storage space on the device which when plugged into a Windows machine automatically loads the driver. The driver then changes it from reporting as a USB mass storage device to a wireless interface. You can get software designed to do this mode switching with the package usb-modeswitch. This little website here has a guide for using it http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/

If he could post the output from lspci and lsusb that may prove helpful.

I have tried and tried using usb-modeswitch with no luck. As for the AM10, (Yes, it is the AM10, I'm the typo king, so I make quite a few spelling errors. Wife says I type to fast for a pick and poke typer.) it died on me, so all I have now is the D-Link. A buddy of mine is sending me several USB adapters and I will go from there.
