 Games
« Thread Started on Jan 30, 2011, 8:35pm »

So I thought it would be interesting to have a discussion about games. Personally I am a big fan of MegaGlest, Cube 2 Sauerbraten, and Assault Cube. Got my fast paced first person shooters covered and a really decent real time strategy to waste some time.

Thought it would be fun to just talk about games and gaming on Linux. Any thoughts?

P.S. You have the dependencies for Assault Cube if you are running SalineOS ;D

You're a man after my own heart. I built my computer for 3D art and gaming (both require lots of processing power and RAM.)

I like all of those games you mentioned, MegaGlest, Sauerbraten and Assualt Cube are all excellent. The only thing I don't like about Assault Cube is the online games are usually team capture the flag. Even if you get into a deathmatch, the next game is usually CTF. ::) I don't like team games because it forces me to play nice, which I don't like.

Other good FPS games are OpenArena and Alien Arena. OpenArena has been good for a long time and Alien Arena has come a long way since I first started playing it last year. I also like arcade-style games like Kobo Deluxe and Chromium BSU. LBreakout is also good, it's my favorite of that type of game. Tile Racer is fun for stunt racing, though it's all time trials, no head-to-head but SuperTuxKart is good for head-to-head kart racing. (good times) And, last but not least, one of my favorite games is Flight Gear Flight Simulator. I love the idea of an open source flight sim with the world's worth of scenery and loads of planes available on their website.

Anywho, those are some of my favorites. I hate it when people talk about "no good gaming" on Linux. IMO, there are lots of good games available and the Debian repositories have lots of them. :D

What I love about Assault Cube is, it's so unapologetically about shooting each other in the face.

I love how insane the graphics are. I can run the latest version at almost full settings on my computer (the highest is just nutty.) It's a great game I just don't like CTF. I love a good FFA. Sauerbraten has a lot of FFA games.

BTW, have you seen this site? http://www.penguspy.com/#/All/free_and_commercial/sort=1/view=1/limit=0

With my old Dell gaming was out of the question but now I have this new Phenom II 4x 3 ghz with 4 gig of ram and nVidia card I should be able to flash a few frames.

Added that site to speed dial but still can't figure out bookmarks on chromium.

There's a little star at the right of the address bar. Click that to bookmark a page. You'll get a little pop-up that will allow you to type a title and select where you want the bookmark to go.

Okay cool! Downloaded Tux Racer via aptitude last night to my VM of SlaineOS just to see how good/bad a VM is with it because in my old Dell vedio was to choppy. I'll damned if it didn't work like a champ except the mouse. I'm sure if I put the mouse back in the PS/2 slot it would work I'll have to dig out that adapter.

Hmm, seems this thread doesn't have a whole heck of alot of life in it. Blood Frontier has been forked and said fork is nearing release if anyone is interested. It really is a fantastic little first person shooter :) Of course to get it you will have to use subversion. Website is here:
http://www.redeclipse.net/

To install on SalineOS
Install the subversion package
Open a terminal and type cd $HOME
Then input this command:
svn co https://redeclipse.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/redeclipse redeclipse
After its done you can launch it by navigating to your home folder /redeclipse and double clicking redeclipse.sh
Since it is a development version and under lots of work you will need to keep it up to date by opening a terminal in the directory and inputting svn update probably before every time you play.

It should be far easier to install after they make a release.

Yeah it fell off in views. I should have posted to it as I am a first person affectionado..
Doom, DoomII, Quake, QuakeII, Quake Arena, Assault Cube etc... and always looking for new stuff...

So, Yeah lets keep this alive and maybe set up a calendar and jump a server..
I usually get killed off easy as I play with Arrow Keys and Touch Pad. Now I have a couple of Thinkpads which sport a J-Stick so I will be a bit more dexterous as a combatant.
But Boy do I need practice.. ;D

Red Eclipse is the only first person shooter I get murdered at by people. The bots are tough too but I can take them pretty good. I think it might be that the only people playing it online are Developers or long time players right now. Once they make a release it wouldn't be too hard to get together and play a game or two.

Mega Glest is a really good game that needs some more players online. I really like the game its just the internet games are scarce. So if anyone is interested in playing you can head over to #glest on Freenode (or the IRC client in game that has its own channel). I lurk there sometimes trying to find a game, I would be happy to slaughter you ;)
