I hope this does well. It's a very nice distro in my opinion and I've tried 50+.

Apologies for being so quiet lately have been hard at work bug fixing and spit shining my image builds. Release candidate 1 is now up on the server and ready for testing Any help spreading the word and helping get off the ground is always much appreciated. I will be working on publicity and fixing up the website for the next couple days in preparation for release.

quite understandable. I installed the rc without a hitch and seems to be working well. I have dropped the name in a few places. good luck.

I just installed Saline. I had downloaded Saline and burnt a copy but, forgot I had the DVD. While visiting Distrowatch I noticed today's announcement. Saline is very nice and I plan on using it. The desktop user manual came in handy and I was able to read the instructions and installed the optional packages that I always think I need. Thank you. I'm a Linux user since 2004 and I have several PCs to play with. I have used most of the Debian based distros. Your desktop is very appealing and well done. Nice work and thanks again.

Yeah, me too. I've tried lots, even some others based on Debian that I just wasn't thrilled with. This one seems really cool so far. I hope it does well.

Well, I've been a Linux user since six years and as much people here tried a lot of stuff too and so far I have to say: three thumbs up to SalineOS. I would like to give some feedback about some of the customizations I did: removed OOo 3.2, installed Libreoffice 3.3 rc4; removed Rhythmbox, installed Decibel-Audio-Player, Quodibet, Exfalso and Mixxx (from lucid repo); removed Ristretto, installed Gpicview and mtPaint; removed Transmission, compiled qBittorrent 2.6.3; Multimedia: Rubyripper, gcue2tracks, SMPlayer and xcfa (added their repo) removed Chromium, installed Google-Chrome 8; pending: compile latest OpenVas 3 on SalineOS. Wireless: the kernel module was successfully compiled and probed, but for some reason the card does not responded, instead I had to use ndiswrapper, no prob so far. Hardware: Dell Inspiron 1525, I plan to install SalineOS at my workplace on a Dell Optiplex.

Welcome to the forums its good to have you here
Decibel was actually considered for the default audio player for Saline OS, but lacking support for Jamendo, Magnatune and radio station management were deal breakers. Should those features make their way into Decibel I would definitely include it as the default.
I fully expect Debian to adopt Libreoffice sometime in the near future so I should be able to pull it from backports. Office, Chromium and Gimp should it ever make its next release are all priorities for pulling from backports.

I stopped trying new distro's some time back, just been sticking to Ubuntu because it works but this sparked my interest and I've been running it on my laptop, very nice, well done.

Let me offer my best wishes as well. I run aptosid-Xfce and I am committed to Debian and Debian-based distributions so this will be an interesting project to watch. Clearly you have done some very clever things.
I also use the smxi family of scripts and I find them to be terrific tools. Any thought about including smxi? A I understand it that would include sgfxi and give users a wider range of tools.
But first things first. I need to download and take a longer look!

Saline OS includes sgfxi for installing binary graphics drivers. I don't include smxi though as its easy to add yourself and really only for advanced users. If you are going to use smxi you should spend some time with his documentation, as its too long and complex for adding to the Saline OS user manual.

Good point re smxi, it does require a bit of experience in order to be comfortable with it.
So are we implying that SalineOS should be new-user friendly? Certainly no bad thing and there are some very clever conveniences built into the desktop that new people would appreciate; e.g., the autoupdate. I like it. Wicd certainly is a friendly connection manager and the required firmware for my intel wireless was preloaded. That is all to the good.
May I suggest that the installer is going to be intimidating to new people and it is not clear in a number of respects?
But you certainly are moving quickly! Just today two pages were added to the manual in an effort to speak to these problems. Well done!
May I suggest: (1) Let's add a series of screen shots to the manual so that the installer is a bit less opaque. Illustrative screenshots are a good thing. (2) Let's clarify the use of GParted a bit. I formatted my partitions before ever starting the install. As nearly as I could tell GParted then wanted to do it again. (Not so, but it looked that way)
Grub on MBR versus Root partition: If someone already has a distro installed running Grub2 and does not want to disturb it, then the logical thing to do is put the Saline grub on the root partition. Then go to the previously installed distro and do "update-grub" (assuming grub2). That I what I did and it works nicely. Why not clarify this in the manual? In fact why not clarify the choice in the installer? People not so experienced in Linux certainly would be less anxious.
And let's be clearer than we are that a separate Home partition certainly can and should be created. In fact let's make that the default.
Once past the installation this is an impressively done Xfce. aptosid-Xfce is a more mature distribution but Saline can stand the comparison very well and it wins on user convenience. For such a new distribution with such a small team (I hope there is a team! This is hard work!) I am genuinely impressed.
And cheers for the artwork. It is tasteful and very well done.
Now I'll go play with Saline for a bit!
