 What comes after Xfce?
« Thread Started on Feb 1, 2011, 1:08pm »

Lxde? That would be nice. I don't think anyone has released a Debian based distro using Lxde as the desktop environment.

Crunchbang is based on Debian Squeeze now. They set the standard with their openbox releases. Archbang is so named because of the popularity of Crunchbang.

They had an Xfce version before SaineOS was released. Instead of trying to directly compete with such a popular distro. You might gather more users with a unique offering of Lxde based on Squeeze.

I know anyone can use the debian repos to install another window manager, but a desktop environment like Lxde could come preconfigured, saving people a lot of post installation tweaking.

Lxde also allows compiz as a window manager instead of openbox and PCmanfm supports gnome-bluetooth. Thunar doesn't.

If someone released a Debian-based distro that was as good as Saline OS with the LXDE desktop, I'd be in heaven. LXDE is my favorite.

The only LXDE I've seen is Debians' and I wasn't impressed. But then Xfce didn't float my boat either till SalineOS.

I believe Debian installs Gnome if you ask for a desktop and nothing if you don't.

Obviously any Lxde distro based on Debian would use the Lxde packages in their repos.

Lxde is a bit unusual in the way uses another window manager like openbox or compiz, kind of like Rox Filer on Fvwm or Gnustep on windowmaker and can be therefore be confusing.

I see that there is a special Xfce/LXDE CD. I don't believe its an option on a Net Install or in the unetbootin choices.

Lxde is one of the 'other installs' on the Debian installer. How they do it I don't know. The net installer will let you install Kde Xfce and Lxde and of course gnome is the default if you want. To get the other three desktops select expert install.

Problem is LXDE doesn't really float my boat either. I started SalineOS to make the best general purpose Xfce distro. Most other distributions using Xfce just don't seem to do it like I think it should be done. Except of course source based distros, but those tend not to be the easiest for people to use.

I see Xubuntu as my primary competitor as they get a lot of use that I don't think they should. They appear to bend over backwards to be both, like Ubuntu and different enough from Ubuntu. Instead of focusing on just being a solid general purpose Xfce distro.

What do you think of #! as a Debian Squeeze based Xfce distro?

Well to be honest I haven't used it much as I always found it entirely too basic (I only ever installed the OpenBox version outside Virtual Box). I quite like the distro, but it seems to be for people who want to fine tune their own systems. I don't like some things they do like shipping Google Chrome by default see http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/eula_text.html for a good explanation why. I would rather use official Debian packages wherever possible, and keep it as "Free as in freedom" as makes sense.

Xubuntu got 255 hits per day on Distrowatch last year. Crunchbang got 378. Saline got 319 hits per day last month. Xubuntu got 220 and Crunchbang got 577.

@haikuhacker that looks good maybe Anthony can tell us how many downloads there have been so far. Deluge has been up for a couple of days now and I haven't even reached 1 to 1 ratio. .65 on the i386.iso and .15 on the amd64.iso forget shell it's at .01.

Well my seed box for the torrents has gotten to about 16,000% on the DVD images since release. I don't keep track of of direct downloads. SalineOS is new I don't expect its too terribly high yet but thats fine, they say Rome wasn't built in a day.

Crunchbang first appeared on Distrowatch 2008-11-27. That's an average of 5.7 new forum members per day.

Saline first appeared on Distrowatch on 2011-01-20. That's average of 5.9 new forum members per day.

I think only Fedora counts their downloads. They're trying to catch Ubuntu. ::)
