..am I stuck with a 'buntu clone?

thanks :'( :P

Hook it up with Ethernet long enough to switch to Network-Manager-Gnome. That's what I had to do with my Dell laptop. Then you can use Saline OS. with WIFI.

I've been getting a hankering to install LFS lately. Hopefully the feeling will pass.

Try Arch from scratch first, just to get the feel of it.

That or Gentoo. I've done 4 LFS's and 2 Gentoo's so maybe it's time to do Arch.

I have only a year and a half under Linux and a big part of it was fighting Ubuntu and my problems making something work with this cheap laptop. Most everything is built into the motherboard and what wasn't, the WIFI module burnt out. You get what you pay for I guess. Anyway I have learned a lot and still fight with gparted and don't know enough to work strictly from a command line. Glad to finally get into Debian and make it work. Funny, took 26 years to get to Linux and I would never go back.

Funny how those thing work out but is you want to learn the inner workings of of Linux build one from scratch. After that everything is easy. Well most things anyways. LFS is very satisfying when done and very frustrating trying to get it done. The first one was a blast when I was done, ran like a rabid ape and never crashed that is until I stripped the debugging symbols of of /lib. I was warned not to do it but just had to get that little extra out of it and I paid dearly, plus no back-up. Never made that mistake again. ;D

Realtek Wifi drivers are well supported with Debian and remember Saline is Debian.
I am in particular running Debian 6 and Saline on one THinkpad that has a rlt8192se Wifi..
Yeah I had to download the Driver go to a terminal and do three simple steps but it is well worth it.
Here is the Debian Wifi Wiki take a look and if you have question post back here or Debian User Forums and I well help you if the Card is supported.

When I installed LMDE I added XFCE right away, don't like Gnome. When I began to thin out some of the applications that were Gnome related I got rid of some extra weight like Gnome panels, Gnome common and several other things. I like the Debian System in both LMDE and Saline. XFCE is a must for me.

SalineOS gives you a good idea on how Debian can be setup to be light weight and fast. If you want to see Xfce at it's worst install Debians' version of it. That will make you appreciate what Anthony has done.

Amen to that. I grabbed the Squeeze XFCE Beta around Christmas or so. I think the lead developers were Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and PeeWee Herman.

My favorites as of now are LMDE, Saline and for a non Deb base, Vector ( based on slack)
Vec is to Slack as Anthony is to Debian.Very similar software selection and the forum support is great too.
A guy named Ken runs opensourcebistro com and has killer tutorials which really show the guts ( and power) of Slack. The only thing wrong with slack is that it never had enough packages.Debian and rpm's can be converted but sometimes bring some bugginess.

It would be fun to benchmark Vector and Saline. Both are smoking fast.

Mandrake 7.0 was my very first Linux install. I payed $25.00 for it at Best Buy back in 1999 or 2000. It came with gnome and KDE both version 1. It came with three disks and a big thick book on how to install and run linux. The third disk had a bunch of Sams book in pdf format plus it had partition magic to re-size your hard drive. Lot's of what we would call non-free stuff now.

I bought Mandrake 7 too. I remember it being of 6 disk, and it cost me $55.00. It was good, but the documentation was wrong at times, often wrong at the wrong time. That was a real showstopper, and I did not Mandrake much because of it.

Oh, well, it's all good fun.

Another old timer. ;)
I was running Stormix back then. I considered it the first " good" Linux distro.I built a machine from scratch using the devs recommended hardware and it was stable as a rock. The Storm package manager is still available on? Distrowatch, I think ?
I ran it for a long time and went to Xandros when they showed up.That was a good one too ( if you liked dropping $100 on a file manager !) I was a beta tester so I cheated. ;D
