Something of interest for you oldtimers, (Like Me) Commodore OS is out in Beta 1. What's interesting is what it's based on. See if you can figure it out from this screen shot:
Looks like Gnome2 icons but not sure of the DE. Is it based on Debian and Xfce or one of the *boxes with that dock I can't think of the name of.

Code:
A Computer for Work or for Play
Don't forget that the new Commodore 64 is a fully functional PC compatible, so you can even install and use the latest versions of Windows if you really feel you need to. We provide a beautiful graphical boot menu at start up from which Windows can be selected to run, so you needn't lose any of the functionality of the new C64's included operating systems. Commodore OS Vision comes with the WINE compatibility layer pre-installed which is capable of running some Windows software. VirtualBox is also included with Commodore OS Vision, allowing you to install Windows and run Windows software in a seamless mode.

I now have Knoppix 6.7.1 running on a USB key. This was the original "live" Debian distro and it currently uses both stable and testing sources...mostly stable. The USB installation was extremely straightforward and easy. The desktop is lxde running Compiz Fusion. One particularly nice feature is the ability to make the key installation persistent and to encrypt the data so that if the key is lost, there is some protection from casual misuse. The abililty to keep all your bookmarks, password info, working files and configuration on media that will go to almost any PC is a real plus. Of all the purported USB installation tools (SalineOS included) I have tried, this was the very first I was able to get to work and it was really slick. The default browser is iceweasel 6.02 and LibreOffice is installed as well.
I found all the cutsie compiz stuff distracting and it slows down the environment. I was able to get rid of it as a default by editing the syslinux.cfg file and adding the cheat code "no3d" to the appropriate lines. Lxde is smooth but lacks the configurabililty of xfce. All in all, I still prefer SalineOS for my primary desktop but Knoppix is quite nice, fast starting and easy to use. On the USB key, it is nearly as fast as a hd install.
If you have an interest in accessibility, the "Adriane" versions of Knoppix available for download work well, with the voice interface loading by default. If you or someone you know needs a free alternative to "Jaws" on W$, it is worth a look. I haven't explored it in depth but it works and sounds the same to my limited experience.
Good to see that Klaus still is at it and putting out an extremely attractive and useable distro.

@Murdock & Richard, I have to agree, as an old Distro Hopper it takes a lot of time and it's fun. I have not played Chess or any other game for a couple of years now. I joined a half dozen Forums, between them and trying out new applications I am busy all the time.
