Trying out Semplice Linux 2.0.1 ("emily"). Based on Debian Sid (Unstable), comes with Openbox. I burned a live CD, checked it out, then decided to add it here. Quick and easy installation (text installer). Originates in Italy, but I've been able to get good help in English from the forum. They've got an alpha (3.0) in the works, but I haven't looked at it.
Default apps include Chromium web browser, PCManFM, Gnumeric and Abiword, and Mirage image viewer. Ships with the tint2 panel. Interesting, they default to sudo instead of su.
Looks very nice so far (installed it about 5 days ago). But this is my first time using Sid or anything that uses Sid repos. I think I'd like it better if it was based on Stable, but it's kinda nice having things like a more up-to-date Chromium browser. This is also the first time I've tried a distro that ships with Openbox; in the past, I've always added it myself.

I can shed some light on the use of sudo instead of su. Sometimes package maintainers and upstream authors use sudo and don't test against su, which causes random bugs to be let through. For sid and testing using sudo is actually a fairly large boon to keeping the system stable. For example, back when Squeeze was in testing I got hit by a random bug, because sudo was hard coded into a utility I was using.
It appears from my standpoint more and more upstream authors are using sudo exclusively, and one of the reasons that I will be moving to sudo for 2.0. It is just a safer option at this point, expecially for a sid based distribution where they will be the first hit with these bugs.

Messing with testing2 on AntiX ( Deb-Mepis testing-Icewm). I got 2 bad downloads (sorcefarce) but it's up and running on live cd. Nice if you're an icewm person.Quck !
I need to go to the recycle center tomorrow and grab some reject IDE drives and toss it on my old Acer. Fun stuff !

Crunch looks very nice. I'll have to run it from a flash using the backport(?) with the 3.2 kernel just for openbox. I was talking to a guy who has been using linux for ever and he prefers xfce over all other window mgr's. Xfce 4.6 & 8 both have bugs from my limited experience and is not as stable as I thought it would be. If openbox is more stable, that would be great. In xfce 4.6, I need to re-add items to my vertically placed bar every so often which is rather annoying. Though it may be due to using bleachbit as admin on a regular basis, still that should not delete items from any panel, but in my case it's only the vertical one and the other two never change.
Why is it that a newer kernel's distro iso considered a backport release exactly? just curious.

I just tried the latest crunch live iso with the 3.2 kernel using openbox. It's debian but in a very slimmed down pkg compared to saline's live iso. The one thing I liked was that it uses conky as it's default system monitor. Still I think xfce's menu items work just fine if not better, as xfce menu items take up no desk space and do not require learning how to configure a conky text file (reminds me of samurize-another nightmare which hasn't been updated since '07). I used univ. usb inst. to boot to it. I also tried to boot to tinyme, openbox also, but it would not see my dvi connection. I think I'll wait to use a flash drive to boot from when I can afford a 32gb minimum usb3 drive & mobo to match and I'll probably put saline on it with noveau . Plus I'm not sure I can use Wally with openbox and my art is way more interesting than conky is.
Not bad. I can get a mushkin 32gb usb3 for around $70 off newegg.

If xfce was unstable I don't think he would use it and he's got far more knowledge than I.
Nothing wrong with looking at other distros but you've already found your bread and butter dependable OS That is what Anthony has been creating in his spare time? and I for one can't thank him enough. I've been running it for 8 months as my main machine and it's taken everything i've thrown at it without any problems
I'm guessing that your on the eternal quest to have the latest and greatest software and have a reliable trouble free experience. You won't find it until Saline 2.0 comes out, just be patient

I ran xfce 4.8 in fedora16 recently and it is the official stable release, yet is not without glitches either which is one reason why it is not in saline. The differences I noticed was that xfce4.8 was somewhat smarter and more easily configured-I liked it but it did have a couple issues. So if squeeze uses 4.6 and the stable is 4.8 but really isn't, what does that tell you? Nothing is perfect of course, but for simplicities sake xfce takes the cake. Even openbox uses xfce modules.
I'm a newb coming from windows where I was constantly hunting for updates. So even your knowledge is well above mine exponentially speaking. I wouldn't give this OS up for anything, but as a newb I can learn by experimentation with other distro's. It's just a little difficult breaking the habit of updating. Eventually I will have a portable OS but I have not settled on which os to use. All I know is it will be as fast as possible and do everything a normal desktop should. Saline is definitely a frontrunner but with flash drives I will find other hardwares to plug into which creates more problems. Toorox (gentoo) may be a good choice as it will ask you for display res at boot which would be handy if you are coming from a desktop to a netbook or something.
Speaking of which I have the xfce Toorox iso but it is from 8/11 and uses the 2.6.39 kernel w/xfce4.8. I'm waiting for a newer version w/xfce which will include the 3.x kernel. They already have the new kde version out (3/12) but I definitely don't want that. http://toorox.de/index.php?lang=en

for me use of sudo is a welcome change.
I mostly use *buntu based distros. until I shifted to Xubuntu, I used any one I liked from Pinguy, LM, Xubuntu, Bodhi. After using XFCE, I loved it and wanted to use a distro with default XFCE just like xubuntu. I heard the name Saline Os in Mint forums and tried it.
It's my first debian distro.
I use home pc for generally net surfing and listening songs. So Bodhi Linux does work for me. I use bodhi more frequently then any other distro.

I just booted out of Saline and into my Bodhi partition. As far as I'm concerned these are currently the two best OS's on the planet. Mint is nice but too much included stuff for me.'buntu is...........'buntu. I have another box with deb experimental and sid goodies running E17 and Aptosid XFCE on the other partition.I'm beginning to like Enlightenment more than XFCE but we'll see what 4.10 has to offer too.

SolusOS looks like one that will be getting a lot of attention. Based on Debian Stable, but with some updated applications from Backports and from their own repos. Comes with GNOME 2. Sounds like they have plans for a modified GNOME 3 that looks like GNOME 2 when they switch to a Wheezy base. Not really my cup of tea; while I liked GNOME 2, I have no real attachment to it, and now I prefer GNOME Shell over GNOME 2. But there are lots of folks who'll want to try SolusOS.
I recently added openSUSE 12.1 (KDE) here. Very nice so far -- especially the YaST Control Center. I've looked at openSUSE live sessions in the past, but this is the first time I've installed it. It's been a pleasant surprise for me.
Also, I did an installation from Debian Live (6.0.4 Xfce). First time I've looked at that project. I used Unetbootin to put it on a flash drive, checked out a live session, then did the installation from that. Since it's the Xfce version, it's kinda interesting to compare the whole thing to installing SalineOS, which of course is much easier and quicker to install; but I think it's great that Debian has a decent option for live sessions that can also be used for installations. That wasn't the case back when I first started using Debian.
