I really enjoy using SalineOS, too, but whether or not it's the best distro out there is highly debatable. Personally, I don't think there is a "best" distro.

Just a report from a curious user.
I installed LinuxMint-13-Cinnamon and was slightly impressed, but LinuxMint-13-Xfce was less impresive. The video from the LiveCD was very shaky with lots of distortion that cleaned but was very noticeable. [Edit: The serious flickering in the slideshow of the installer comes from the Ubuntu installer used by LinuxMint. Saw the same thing in the 12.04-LTS. Yes, just checking out something that might get fixed and keep working. :]
So I installed the LM-13-Cinnamon-(gnome2/3); even my HP1020 was recognized out of the box (like with SalineOS.) Then I rebooted and no printer. A couple more reboots and back to work with SalineOS.
Why do I keep trying. Today, I booted the LM-13-Cinnamon and the HP1020 printer worked; go figure. I've had problems with this printer with everything that I've tried. SalineOS seems to handle it best; remind me why I keep bothering.
And now, it seems that Wheezy will come with Xfce4.8 as default which makes us, either more mainstream, or we will be just like the others. I know that we are already a step ahead of the game. Wheezy as it should be; improved by Anthony.
SalineOS-1.6 is my salvation. Only my incessable curiousity causes problems. My wife says it's a curse. I'm inclined to believe her.

I had the same problem with two different HP printers that didn't work with Cinnamon consistently.
I was just about to hit send with my question about how you all were able to get it to be stable...but then I realized that I misread.
Question deleted
Back to the proverbial drawing board with SalineOS...

I have find Xubuntu, right out box to be perfect for people that are new to Linux. It is also great for people with old and slower computers. For my gaming laptop (Asus G73jw) I am using Linux Mint 13 with Mate. I find Linux Mint also very good for new users.

valiant-ship-v1.iso released July 2012 Puppy Linux, based on slackware, with xfce 4.10 desktop ("live" distro, with persistence)
dl from http://sourceforge.net/projects/latestxfcepuppy/ (contrary to the on-page description, it has xfce desktop, not Mate desktop)
"homepage" (of sorts) for this distro: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=80010
==================
Interesting because:
-- the full v4.10 xfce suite is still (Oct 2012) not available as .deb packages via Debian repositories
-- the dialog windows of its utilities provide very VERY clear/detailed explanations of "what this does", "what to do", etc.
-- the distro packs a helluva lot of functionality into a 130Mb iso

IMO, not "Linux Mint Debian xfce", though. Failure to provide version of that distro which includes a "pae" kernel (expecting "new users" to read and apply "excercises in the black arts" to install the alternative kernel, and video drivers) is a grand disservice to the user.

@ava, I agree with you there. LMDE never really worked as I expected. Put the older LinuxMint Xfce on several older machines for people and it worked well for them. I have an install of LM-Xfce-13 somewhere and it works well, even drives my HP1020 with no problem (a major concern of mine

Just took a look at a Parted Magic (pmagic_2012_10_10.iso) live session from a Unetbootin flash drive. Nice! Openbox, with LXPanel and SpaceFM file manager, Firefox 16 -- and quite an assortment of system tools, of course.

You might also be able to install it, depending on what you're running: http://ignorantguru.github.com/spacefm/
I installed it in Debian Wheezy (GNOME) just now and looked over the user's manual to get a better feel for what's what. Looks good so far.

Being new to this forum, I've tried alot of distros in the past year. {New to Linux too] I run a dual boot machine with XP and as long as the installer has GRUB I really don't worry about configing the loader etc. Before I tried Saline, I was running Solus which I liked but after one certain update and I can't remember if it was a kernel update, my machine ran like a 33mhz Pentium. Bogged it right down so I dumped it and Saline was my next choice on the hit parade. Have always like XFCE desktop for its lightness on the system and since I run an old P-IV Dell I usually opt for it. My fav other distros are: Zorin, Xubuntu and Manjaro which has a new release coming up. Just my two cents.

Hello, I have installed a lot of distros. I have been happy with Ubuntu 12.04 with Cinnamon but it ibecomes now a 'usine à gaz", eine große Maschine ohne Seele. Really disappointed with LMDE and Linux Mint which is just a pale fork. Ubuntu's philosophy and poor adaptations don't please me no more. Now I am very happy with Debian in a return to roots. Using SalineOs XFCE on a master PC (everyrthing is ok) and Crunchbang OpenBox on a second one (everything works perfectly too). Because satisfaction is a matter.

I really like crunchbang, but i hate the whole "menu" issue of newly installed items not being added into the menu. How does crunchbang not see this as a problem? Do they think people are content with manually having to add items or edit .xml files by hand? Ya, there is a workaround, but that adds the entire default debian menu listing inside of the crunchbang menu.
