Currently my dualboot setup has xp with sp3. It does NOT have IE, WMP, or windows update features. Autopatcher is an easy way to 'update' and ms security iso's are easily had as well. Security essentials (and the defender garbage) is junk IMO. All you need is a good fw like privacywares private firewall. AV is also useless imo. I use clamwin portable and only run it IF I am suspicious. I ran the alternate shell sharpe enviro for about a year but they died on 12/1/11. Now I run the alternate shell EmergeDesktop I found not two days later not even looking for one-lol. It's even slimmer than sharpe and works fine even though it hasn't even hit 1.0 yet. I had to use a custom skin for it but it was rather easy to install. I ran win7 ult (under sharpe) for a while but I saw no real need to reinstall it. XP does whatever 7 will, aside from the vm stuff and my hardware is not enough to comfortably run a vm. Smarter to simply have 2 boxes anywho. THE most important piece of software in windows is acronis true image-bar none as system restore never fixed squat and the windows backup is also a joke. So far, even if I bork saline for some reason, reinstalling will be cake compared to the week long process of reinstalling winblows and reconfiguring it for daily use. Even the thought of rebooting into xp is tasteless. Hopefully within a year I can delete it all together and never look back. Validating and upgrading wga and all the pricing nonsense for what is an insecure environment is retarded. Plus if i really need a windows environ on the fly I can boot into hiren's for free.
So far wine has worked admirably with: akelpad, foobar, freearc, image shack uploader, palemoon portable, password safe, and xnview. I now use keepassx of course. Windows only has qemu which kinda sucks imo.

I'm a foobar lover to, I like the small footprint and the quality of the sound. I used to us acronis but moved on to r-drive but for the last couple of years I've been using http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx You burn a restore CD after installing Macrium but if you purchase it you get a Windows 7 PE CD that will restore & backup.
"shell EmergeDesktop" looks interesting but I don't really use Windows very much these days but I think I will have a look at it after doing a macrium backup
