 Do you like Ubuntu?
« Thread Started on Jan 28, 2011, 12:37am »

I don't! It's always been a pain to install tons of bug 8.10 just refused to work with pulseaudio plus other minor things. I understand some folks on here cut their teeth on Ubuntu and think highly of it.

The distros I've found useful stable and easy to install has been.

Slackware but updates are a major pain. extra stable.

Debian. The installer has so many options and the expert mode is to die for. Plus you can have rock solid stability or bleeding edge and every thin in between and lets not forget about the 25,000 + programs it has.

LinuxMint - Debian. Simple installer that just works. Very stable even thou it's based on Debian testing. One of the best looking Gnomes I've seen.

Saline OS the best for last. My only complaint is the no Expert mode in the installer, but true-fully it may not be needed. I just need to get used to gparted instead of cfdisk. All that point and click can be so confusing at times. :D

I cut my teeth on Ubuntu. I used 9.10 for several months and also Kubuntu 9.10 but I wasn't crazy about the 10.04 release, so I moved on to Linux Mint 9. I no longer find Ubuntu itself to be that great of a distro but I like distros based on Ubuntu. I'm using Peppermint, which is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and I also have space reserved for Mint 10 KDE when it's released.

Other than that, I also run Saline (of course. ;)) I like the Debian stable base a lot but I'm not all that crazy about Debian itself.

I like all the distros you mentioned except Slackware which I haven't tried yet. I didn't cut my teeth on Ubuntu but I've kept the current LTS version installed since Dapper and things have worked out fine here.

I have't tried Slackware either. I don't find their website very inviting, they have no screenshots and not much info about their distro.

Slackware will usually install on just about anything.
Then you have to build it up. Kind of like doing a net install of Debian.
Only more fastidious and tedious. :)

My first distro was Slackware so it has a fond place in my heart. I have Gentoo and SalineOS on my junk notebook (Given to me for free cause it didn't survive the previous owners college days so well) I like using Xfce (Obviously) so no I don't like Ubuntu. Every time I try using Xubuntu I feel that it was a half baked effort. It kinda ruins Xfce out of the box :( My desktop PC now only has SalineOS on it ... Installed on 6 partitions at all times, unless I am formatting one install for testing purposes. Before starting SalineOS I was running Lenny + Backports, PCLinuxOS, Gentoo and Ubuntu gnome (The least used). PCLinuxOS is what I play around with KDE on, as I feel they do it best. If you are looking to try a KDE distro I would recommend taking them for a spin. Though I can't bring myself to use KDE for my daily machines, it is always fun to mess around with. And, the PCLinuxOS community are a good bunch of people :)

I never liked ubuntu or any of his derivatives, I have always used slackware and some of his derivatives and debian itself, at one point I used dreamlinux but that distro seems to be dead now, I also have crunchbang statler as a fall back install on my pc's,

If Slackware hadn't dropped gnome I'd still be using it. Package management is a bit tedious but that is one rock solid disto.

I've built 4 Linux from Scratch's again update are major pains.

The first Gentoo I made was nice but that was on an old K6 400 mz system and when I built one for the the Dell Xorg refused to work. The drivers for the video card were unstable and couldn't down grade enough to get stable drivers.

In the early day of linux I used Window Maker and when Xfce first came out I hated it and if not for the way Anthony has rendered it I would still say pffft. And slim seams like a very low recourse using programe unlike gdm witch I dislike but have never had anything better.

Yes, I too like that crowd over at PCLinuxOS....I've been part of it. I cut my teeth on Redhat in 1997 or so. I've also been a Slackware users and like that.

This is my favorite right now, just ahead of LMDE x64.

PCLinuxOS is awesome, I love the OS and their forums are a great source of help, though I'm not a member. The only thing I don't like is the selection of games available in the repos, it's a bit thin, but PCLOS is a great distro all the same. ;D

I'm a gamer. I have been since the 1980s when I was a kid playing the ol' Atari. (ah, the memories) So, it's important to me that I have at least one Linux distro installed with games. However, I still like to use PCLOS for other things. And they do have a modest selection of games. Plus, the game Metal Blob Solid and its sequel will run on my computers in Ubuntu and Debian based distros but I get no sound. The sound works in PCLOS.

In fact, now that E17 has finally gone 1.0, I was thinking of trying PCLOS E17 again. The last time I tried it, E17 was still in Alpha and it was a mess. It crashed while I was trying to update and messed everything up. :(
